My puppy has diarrhea after eating expired food. What should I do?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Female | spayed | 3 months and 27 days old | 6 lbs

My 3 month old chihuahua has had diarrhea for the past two days. It goes from watery based to just really soft and mushy. I already found out the problem. She ate some expired doggy food which is for puppies digestive system. However after her first diarrhea spell she has not had that food, it's been thrown away. First day she went 8 times diarrhea. Today the second day she has went three times already and it's only 1:30pm my time. She generally goes 2-3 times out the day. What should I do?

I strongly recommend starting her on a probiotic/fiber supplement such as fortifolora and a bland, low fat diet for the next 48hours and this should resolve now that the offending food has been withdrawn. Ensure to keep pups up to date with deworming treatments also as internal parasites can contribute to diarrhea
