My dog has diarrhea after whelping. Is it food, milk, or afterbirth?

The diarrhea could be related to eating the placentas and afterbirth, or could be a sign of another disease like intestinal parasites. Hormonal changes or diet changes (such as suddenly switching to the puppy food) can sometimes cause diarrhea post-birth, however if it is continuing, bringing in a fecal sample of Lacey's stool to your vet is a good next step. Your vet can check for common parasites or other issues that could be causing the diarrhea, especially if a bland meal hasn't helped. If the diarrhea continues and the fecal comes back negative, a more thorough exam from your vet is best.

Hello. As long as Lola is eating & drinking fairly well, nursing the puppies & seeming to be contented, she should be well. If you have not wormed her in the past few months, I would definitely take a stool sample to your veterinarian now to make sure she will not be passing any parasites to her puppies. Because some parasites are inevitable in puppies, & based on what & if your vet sees anything in the stool, you will need to start administering a wormer to the puppies starting at 2 weeks of age. Hello. While the stool is not altogether abnormal, I can see your concerns. The first thing to do is take a sample to your veterinarian for a parasite analysis. You want to make sure Soska is not harboring intestinal worms that can be transmitted to her puppies. In the meantime, switch her to a bland diet for a few days. I use 75% white rice & 25% white chicken breast. A little low fat cottage cheese is OK. I would also start her on a good probiotic like Purina's FortiFlora. This is available over the counter. Poor Willow! Feed her a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If the diarrhea continues on the bland diet, she starts vomiting food, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away. Best of luck.
