Why is my puppy's stool loose after switching from rice and chicken?

Hello, I would recommend picking up some probiotics from your vet to help repopulate his gut with good bacteria. Common ones are called Fortiflora and Proviable, but there are other fine brands as well. Also ensure that Chicharon has been dewormed recently. Most areas recommend giving puppies general deworrmer every two weeks during the first four months of life. You can also pick up some prescription canned gastrointestinal food from your vet made to be easy on the belly. Plain rice and pumpkin are also fine choices though. A bit of loose stool is common for dogs in a stressful situation, such as moving to a new home, so this may be a short lived situation. I hope this helps. Poor Murphy, he sounds very sensitive! Limiting change to the adult, chicken version may help if available and a probiotic paste can be very helpful for any diet transition. In sensitive pets, a 10% change every 3-5days can help reduce upsets. In large breed dogs, puppy food is ok up to 15months so there is no immediate hurry

There are many causes for loose stool in puppies and in some cases the bowel is just slow to develop and adapt to the demands of a rapidly growing dog! My preferred option is royal canin gastrointestinal junor, which should be fed for at least 6 weeks to promote bowel development. Yes, I would keep her on that diet and I would also add in a probiotic like FortiFlora. It must be a probiotic made for dogs even if you can’t get the specific one. I think it is the best. One packet on the food daily and I would do it for at least two weeks no matter when the diarrhea stops.

The ingredients in the diet you are currently feeding are fine and quinoa would not be more beneficial than potatoes or carrots unless there was a known issue with them. I see Luca's stool in the pictures and they are definitely loose. It also appears that he is straining to defecate. Without knowing more, I'm suspicious that there is a problem in the colon causing him to have diarrhea. This could be an infection, or an inflammatory bowel disease. Infection is a common cause of diarrhea in younger dogs. Either way, it's best to have him evaluated by your vet, because I'm not sure that a diet change will help his current condition. A vet can test his stool ( make sure to take a fresh sample with you) and possibly do other testing to help identify the cause. Once the cause of this is identified, the correct treatment and diet can be advised. You can help him get through this by feeding bland food (boneless chicken and rice is good). Feed small portions (1/2 cup or less) three times a day. You can also add probiotics to the food (can get this at the pet store), which has demonstrated some efficacy for improving diarrhea. It is very common for dogs to have some GI upset when first being adopted. It is usually a combination of the stress of adjusting to a new environment and a change in food. I think the ingredients in this product look good and you could start those right away. I would also recommend giving a combination of plain white rice and boiled chicken for a few days. This is a bland diet and easy to digest. Once the signs have improved, you can start to transition Coal from the chicken and rice to the diet you want him on permanently. I think the stool is looking OK for what he is eating. I really don't recommend giving any dairy products when a dog has diarrhea. Cottage cheese is not really something I would suggest. At this stage you should put him back on his regular food and add in a probiotic (one made for dogs, not people). I like Fortiflora and you should use it for a minimum of 14 days.
