Is my puppy's diarrhea from dental sticks normal? Will it improve?

I am very sorry to hear that Ziggy is experiencing these problems, I am sure it is very unsettling for you both. There are a number of potential causes of such clinical signs, including dietary indiscretion, pancreatitis, parasite infestation, infection, and ingestion of a toxin or poison. It sounds very likely that it was the denta stick if Ziggy has a sensitive stomach. I would try raw carrot sticks and brushing with a dog toothpaste and tooth brush for oral hygiene. Because you have only noticed these signs over the course of a few hours I would continue to monitor Ziggy at home. Rest Ziggy's gastrointestinal tract by holding back food for a few hours. Then you can continue with a bland and easily digested food of the boiled chicken breast and white rice diet and provide plenty of fresh water. If Ziggy does not improve, has profuse vomiting or diarrhoea, you notice fresh blood, Ziggy seems lethargic, in pain or depressed I would advise a trip to the veterinarian. Try not to let Ziggy eat his feces in he future as it will contribute to the problem. I know dogs can have this strange habit and it can be difficult to keep them away from it. HI, thanks for using Petcoach! I am sorry Ziggy is sick! Sadly there isn't a perfect treat to keep a dogs teeth clean. Veterinary dentists recommend brushing their teeth AT LEAST three times per week. Anything less isn't doing anything. If Ziggy has a lot of tartar build up already then it is best to have an anesthetic (put under) dental to have his teeth cleaned, X-rayed and extracted if infected. Then brushing his teeth 3 or more times per week will hopefully keep the tartar away. Below is a link to the Veterinary Oral Health Councils recommend products. Ziggy may have diarrhea secondary to GI inflammation from the ribbon. As long as he is acting normally, not lethargic, eating well and not vomiting I would just monitor him for now. You can try offering a bland diet of boiled chicken and sweet potato or rice to see if this firms up his stools. It is very important to monitor him for any abnormal signs especially vomiting or not eating. Strings and ribbons can cause a serious GI blockage so if any of the above signs develop Ziggy should be seen by a veterinarian right away. Also, if his diarrhea persists I would recommend seeing your veterinarian as it could be related to GI parasites or may require medication to resolve. HI, some dogs have sensitive stomachs and switching foods is not recommended. One option is to make sure you are feeding her a bland food with a chicken and rice base. I would stay away form the milkbone treats and give a greenie only occasionally, not every day. If you want to be really safe, exclude all treats from her diet unless they are a bland chicken. You can even feed the Hill's ID diet life long if needed. I certainly recommend changing up her diet then staying consistent with it. Good luck, I hope this helps!

It is unlikely that Zoe has developed diarrhea from her food if this has been a consistent food through out the years. I would be more concerned about colitis, parasites, gastric upset or even disease that can cause irritation of the bowel. I would recommend taking her to the vet for a fecal exam to make sure there is no underlying disease. I hope that helps

Generally most dental sticks including greenies are not recommended for dogs with IBD. the only one i can recommend is Virbac C.E.T. VeggieDent Chews, it's hypoallergenic and Jemma night do better on those.

If only Reign could talk! I am concerned that whatever was making him sick is still continuing. I recommend to offer the bland diet of chicken and rice again. I also recommend to call your veterinarian to figure out your options. Your vet likely has COVID protocols in place to protect themselves and the staff. Continued issues could mean many things that could range from parasites (including giardia) to a foreign object blocking the outflow tract in his stomach.
