Dog sensitive stomach: Can carrots replace dental sticks for cleaning?

I am very sorry to hear that Ziggy is experiencing these problems, I am sure it is very unsettling for you both. There are a number of potential causes of such clinical signs, including dietary indiscretion, pancreatitis, parasite infestation, infection, and ingestion of a toxin or poison. It sounds very likely that it was the denta stick if Ziggy has a sensitive stomach. I would try raw carrot sticks and brushing with a dog toothpaste and tooth brush for oral hygiene. Because you have only noticed these signs over the course of a few hours I would continue to monitor Ziggy at home. Rest Ziggy's gastrointestinal tract by holding back food for a few hours. Then you can continue with a bland and easily digested food of the boiled chicken breast and white rice diet and provide plenty of fresh water. If Ziggy does not improve, has profuse vomiting or diarrhoea, you notice fresh blood, Ziggy seems lethargic, in pain or depressed I would advise a trip to the veterinarian. Try not to let Ziggy eat his feces in he future as it will contribute to the problem. I know dogs can have this strange habit and it can be difficult to keep them away from it. It sounds like the denta sticks are not agreeing with him. I would suggest trying an alternative dental chew. Greenies provide a very good dental chew. The raw carrots in the kong that you provide are also very good for Ziggy's teeth.

Cleaning teeth daily and regular dental checks work much better. Please, stick to that, as dental care diets are in my opinion, not worth the money.

The best thing I can recommend is daily brushing with a canine toothbrush and canine toothpaste. I love the CET brand of dental products for dogs, they are excellent. Chew sticks are ok, and you can use something like Dentasticks as a daily treat, but they won't have as good effects as brushing. I hope this helps!

Because Korbyn is fairly young, it will be possible to train him to accept having his teeth brushed by providing plenty of praise and treats during the process. Treats can also be given to supplement brushing, you should look for treats that have enzymatic properties as well as ones that take a while to chew, as this action strengthens the jaw and removes tartar. These are good treats for your dog, but they won't clean his teeth well. You can use dental specific treats for him to clean his teeth, and I also recommend brushing his teeth. You will need to use a dog specific toothpaste, as human toothpastes are not safe for dogs. You can get the toothpaste and a toothbrush for him from a pet store.
