Why does my dog have monthly diarrhea? Should I change food or chews?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Female | spayed | 7 years and 6 months old | 80 lbs

we have always fed Zoe IAMS brand, currently she gets the blue bag for optimal weight, she also receives a dentastix & some type of rawhide during the day. since this past October she's had diarrhea once a month, at which time we resorted to white rice & chicken broth to reset her system. Should we change the brand of food? If so, whats your specific recommendation for food brand? Are dentastix helpful for teeth or is this unnecessary? & what's a healthy chew option to replace the rawhide?

It is unlikely that Zoe has developed diarrhea from her food if this has been a consistent food through out the years. I would be more concerned about colitis, parasites, gastric upset or even disease that can cause irritation of the bowel. I would recommend taking her to the vet for a fecal exam to make sure there is no underlying disease. I hope that helps

I think it's something else, and two weeks is a long time to have diarrhea. If Zoey is still acting and doesn't act sick, it could be intestinal worms. She needs to see a vet, please take her into one in the morning.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Zoey. If her stool is still not normal by tomorrow, I would have her evaluated by her veterinarian. Four days is long enough that if she still has diarrhea, I worry it will not resolve without a medication. She should have fecal testing to rule out any parasites or a bacterial overgrowth. The tick is not likely the cause of the diarrhea. While they can spread diseases, it would unusual for her to have signs so quickly. In the meantime, offer plenty of water so that she does not become dehydrated. It is also generally safe to to withhold food for 18-24 hours if Zoey has been otherwise healthy. This will sometimes resolve the diarrhea by resting the GI tract. I hope this information helps!

Poor Zoe! The diarrhea and subsequent illness causing it could make her feel weak and ill, and not want to move as much. Diarrhea in dogs can be caused by a GI illness, eating something rotten, intestinal parasites, a sudden change in diet, or a foreign body. I would recommend trying a home remedy first to see if that helps with her diarrhea before taking her into a vet. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If the diarrhea continues on the bland diet, she starts vomiting food, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away.

My dog keeps having diarrhea even with new diets. What should I do?

I hate to hear this is happening. Any dogs with chronic diarrhea that does not respond to OTC diets needs to be examined by the veterinarian. She may have a parasite, a bacterial issue or she may need a prescription diet meant for dogs with dietary intolerance or food allergy. Blonca will need some diagnostics. And the doctor will need a good idea of what diets you have tried in the past. I hope this helps.

My senior dog has monthly vomiting and diarrhea. What's the fix?

It certainly not normal that Chewy vomits or has diarrhea at least once a month. This could be caused by an ongoing health problem such as kidney disease, diabetes, liver disease, or cancer among others. The only way to find a remedy that works is to have the cause of this diagnosed, which needs to be done by a vet. I would have Chewy seen by a vet in the morning for a physical exam, geriatric blood panel, urinalysis, and x-rays. These tests will help the vet identify a possible medical cause behind the vomiting and diarrhea so a remedy can be started for him.

Why does my dog have loose stool for months, even with good appetite?

Max may have chronic diarrhea related to several issues including GI parasites, food sensitivities, or internal medical issues like inflammatory bowel disease. I'd recommend having him examined by your veterinarian and having a stool sample checked out. It would also be a good idea to try a higher quality food like Royal Canin Sensitive stomach. You can also feed a bland diet of boiled chicken and sweet potato or rice for a couple days to see if this helps. Often times a good sensitivity will develop later in life so Max may need a diet change to resolve the issue. Why does my new dog still have diarrhea after vet visit & diet change?

Dogs will frequently develop diarrhea from a diet change which is why it is recommended to slowly transition your pet from one food to another. Since worms have been ruled out, it is likely that this is your pup's issue, although there may be many reasons for diarrhea including infection, allergies and other disorders. If the diarrhea does not resolve in another day or two, you should take her back to your veterinarian to determine the underlying cause of the diarrhea.
