My puppy has diarrhea after deworming. When can I give next dose?

Does worming tablets cause diarrhoea in dogs? My puppy was given a worming tablet last Sunday and would have been due for another yesterday however I did not as he only just recovered from the diarrhoea. (we were advised it was one every week until he is 12 weeks) he pooped normally but today he has not pooped this morning and threw up a little it was white. He had some breakfast. Should I be concerned? Also do you advise I should give him another worming tablet today or wait another week?

Yes, deworming tablets can cause some diarrhea in puppies, but it could also be due to the dead worms moving through Hunter's intestines. Given that he has just recovered from diarrhea, I recommend waiting another week before giving him the next deworming tablet. It's fine to deworm him every two weeks until he is 12 weeks of age, then he should be dewormed monthly until six months of age. After that, he needs to be dewormed every three months. It could be that Lex is suffering from intestinal worms which are very common in puppies and would cause diarrhea. It's a good sign that he is playful and active as well as eating, so the worms would be at the top of my differential list. Other possibilities include a GI illness or the diet you are feeding him. I would give him a deworming treatment such as Panacur which you can get OTC. It's a three day course of treatment, and he will need another course of treatment two weeks after the first ends to kill all the worms. He should then be dewormed every month until he is six months old and then should be deworming every three months thereafter. If he is up to date on his deworming treatments, then I would have Lex seen by a vet for a health check.

Strongid will take care of the worms but if the diarrhea is still occurring then you should get her rechecked. There may be a bacterial infection or something causing it at this point. At 6 weeks if she is other wise healthy they can start her vaccines also

Make sure she is on a good food as a poor diet can also lead to diarrhea

Finn is so handsome! A common cause of diarrhea in puppies is intestinal worms. It could be he has a heavy burden of intestinal worms causing these symptoms. If he isn't up to date on his deworming treatments, I would give him one now and another in two weeks. After that, he should be dewormed every three months. Should he be up to date on his deworming treatments, I would take him into the vet to have him checked out to determine the cause of his diarrhea. Best of luck, I hope this helps!

Your puppy may have to take a second round of wormer approximately 2 to three weeks after the first. Considering your puppy was severely infected with round worms (if you can see them= severe infection) these worms likely laid a lot of eggs which now have turned into larvae/worms and were not hit by the first round of the wormer. This should then hopefully alleviate the diarrhea.

Thanks for submitting your question regarding Marmaduke. He needs to see his veterinarian again. Fecal testing will be performed. If it was done on his first visit, it may be repeated or additional tests recommended. Depending on his results, medication will likely be prescribed. A diet change to a prescription low fat diet may be beneficial as well. I typically do not recommend extended fasting on puppies as is common in adults with diarrhea. He is growing and needs to eat. Puppy threw up dewormer, sick, vomiting, diarrhea. What should I do?

Poor pups. While a heavy parasite load can cause severe GI upset, and anemia which can cause a pup to become extremely lethargic, have bloody diarrhea, etc, I would also want to rule out underlying illnesses as a possibility. It would be best to bring them to a vet ASAP especially if they are lethargic or unable to keep any food or water down as puppies can quickly become very dehydrated. They may also need supportive care such as an IV or injected medications if they are very ill from the parasites or other causes. You can try continuing to offer water, or rubbing a little honey on their gums for energy until you can get to the vet, however due to the severity of symptoms it would be best to seek emergency care.

My dog has diarrhea after rescue and deworming. What can I do?

Oh no, poor Fat Boy! You are correct that worms could be causing the diarrhea, but if he was being starved, the sudden change in diet could also be causing the diarrhea. I can give you a home remedy to try to see if that helps. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If the diarrhea continues on the bland diet, he starts vomiting food, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away. With the deworming, he will need another deworming treatment two weeks after the first to kill all the worms. After that, he should be dewormed every three months.
