Why does my puppy keep getting roundworms despite deworming?

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Male | unneutered | 3 months and 28 days old | 63 lbs

Why does my puppy keep getting round worm? And how can I prevent it? He’s been getting de-worming shots with his puppy shots every 4 weeks since 6 weeks old (1 more puppy pack to go this Sunday). He’s our only dog and went to the dog park for the very first time this past Sunday and once more on Tuesday.

Just in case, make sure your veterinarian is confirming the presence of roundworms (tapeworms can sometimes be confused for roundworms). If tapeworms are present, Koda will need a special medication.
The two most common reasons for persistent infection with roundworms are not yet clearing the infection he was born with (yes, they can be infected in uterus) or your yard is contaminated with roundworm eggs (one study showed roundworm eggs remained infective for 20 years).
Continue with the routine dewormings and start him on a heartworm prevention like Interceptor. You should also alert your vet who may change the deworming schedule. Remember that these worms can also spread to humans so make sure to practice good hygiene. Here is a link with more helpful information:

Poor pup. Roundworms are very common in puppies, because they can get infected while still in their mothers tummy (in utero) and through the mother's milk. To treat roundworms Harry just needs a broad spectrum dewormer like Pyrantel Palmoate or Fenbendazole. 1 treatment given today and then again in 2 weeks. To prevent roundworm infestations in the future Harry needs to get on a monthly heartworm preventative, which has natural intestinal dewormer in it as well. Harry will need to see a vet to get a prescription for the heartworm preventative (i.e. Heartgard, Trifexis, etc), but the intestinal dewormer can be purchased through your local pet store. Your pup should be just fine once he is treated. : )

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It sounds like Koga has roundworms. The eggs of intestinal parasites are shed in his poop not from his fur. You need to clean up the stools as soon as he goes to prevent contamination of the environment. Your son should be ok as long as he isn’t eating the poop. Just make sure to wash his hands after he plays with the puppy or before he eats. You will need to treat Koga twice (3 weeks apart) and the you should be all set. Good luck and kisses to Koga!

Why does my 7-month puppy still have worms after dewormer & Heartgard?

I am sorry to hear about your concern for Poppie! Depending on when your groomer saw the worms, it is possible they could have been worms killed by the dewormer and then pooped out. There are also different kinds of worms one may see in the stool, some of which are not killed by the commonly used dewormer or the dewormer in heartgaurd (such as tapeworms). I would recommend dropping a stool sample off for your vet to check under the microcsope, or if your groomer sees another worm having them save it and bring it in for your vet to check. Your vet can then prescribe the appropriate dewormer for Poppie.

The best medication for this is usually chosen based on a fecal examination to determine which parasite is affecting Ace. The same deworming medication can be given to your other dog. Congratulations on your new puppy! I would recommend that she sees veterinarian for a new puppy visit. She will have fecal testing and see if she needs a deworming medication in addition to the Interceptor. She will also be started on her initial vaccines. I suspect the Interceptor tablet you gave is working and killing the intestinal parasites. That is why you are seeing them come out in the stool. You will want to keep her on it each month for the heartworm prevention as well. I hope this information helps!

My puppy has diarrhea again after roundworm medication. Why?

Your puppy may have to take a second round of wormer approximately 2 to three weeks after the first. Considering your puppy was severely infected with round worms (if you can see them= severe infection) these worms likely laid a lot of eggs which now have turned into larvae/worms and were not hit by the first round of the wormer. This should then hopefully alleviate the diarrhea.
