Why does my 8-week-old puppy have diarrhea after chewing rawhide?

Poor Trooper. This is likely from the rawhide but it could also be from parasites, viral infection, any human food, eating something he shouldn’t, and much more. You could try to withhold his food for 12 hours and then reintroduce a small amount of plain chicken (no bones) and white rice to see if this settles his tummy. If he is lethargic, continuing to have bloody diarrhea, vomiting, or refusing to eat then I would have your vet take a look at him. Your vet will be able to do a fecal, blood work or even x-rays if needed. Your vet will also be able to get him started on some meds to help settle his tummy and make him feel better. Congratulations ok the new puppy. There are many chases if diarrhea in a young puppy. Sudden diet change, GI parasites, eating food that irritates their stomach (such as the hot dogs), or something more serious like parvo or distemper virus. diarrhea and get the appropriate treatment. If he is eating and otherwise acting playful, I would recommend you stop feeding him the hot dog treats and add canned pumpkin to his diet to help firm up his stool. Hormonal changes or diet changes (such as suddenly switching to the puppy food) can sometimes cause diarrhea post-birth, however if it is continuing, bringing in a fecal sample of Lacey's stool to your vet is a good next step. Your vet can check for common parasites or other issues that could be causing the diarrhea, especially if a bland meal hasn't helped. If the diarrhea continues and the fecal comes back negative, a more thorough exam from your vet is best.

We can have diarrhea due to stress (of a move to new home) or diet changes, however in young dogs we also worry about intestinal parasites (both worms and Protozoa that aren't killed by deworming) and in some cases depending on vaccine status parvovirus. For this reason it is best to have your pup checked at the vet and bring a stool sample for them to test. Until then you can pick up a probiotic for dogs at the vet or pet store and try feeding plain cooked white rice and boiled shredded chicken breast for a day or two.

It is very common for puppies to have diarrhea. This can happen with intestinal parasites, infectious diseases such as parvo virus, change in diet or even stress from the change in homes. It's possible that he also picked up and ate something off the grass that upset his system. If he's normal otherwise (no vomiting, good appetite, normal activity level) you could start by giving him plain boiled chicken breast and plain white rice in a 1 to 1 ratio. You can also add a small amount of pumpkin puree as the fiber can help firm up the stools. If the diarrhea continues or he becomes ill, starts vomiting, acting lethargic, or doesn't want to eat, I would strongly recommend taking him to a veterinarian right away. They will most likely want to do a fecal exam to check for parasites, a parvo test to check for this very serious illness and may even do blood work and x-rays to look for evidence of a stomach or intestinal blockage. This is very common in puppies since they like to chew on and swallow things they shouldn't.

It's possible the change in food could be causing digestive upset. The best way to start transitioning to solids is to make a slurry of their regular milk replacer that they've already been on combined with a little bit of the puppy food. This helps make it easier to digest without being too big of a change and may help settle their stomachs. Checking for any parasites with a fecal exam and deworming may also help, however if the vomiting or diarrhea continues, a vet checkup to rule out anything more serious is best.
