My puppy ate rawhide, now has bloody diarrhea and mucus. What's wrong?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Luna! Blood isn't uncommon in the stool of dogs with diarrhea. The blood indicates inflammation in the colon. The diarrhea and blood can be from the raw hide so I would avoid them in the future. If she is eating, bright and not vomiting you can wait until Monday. Other causes of diarrhea are: intestinal parasites, viral or bacterial infections, other dietary indiscretions, toxin ingestion, pancreatitis, food allergy/intolerance, reaction to a new treat/table food/food. You can start a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice. Feed 1 cup per 20 lbs per day until 2 normal stools. I wish Luna the best!

If he is acting normal then you can withhold food for 12 hours and then offer him a small amount of a bland diet, like boiled chicken and white rice, and see how he does with that. You could also add a probiotic to his food. If the diarrhea continues, he starts vomiting, and/or becomes lethargic then he needs to be examined by a vet for treatment. He could have an infection, parasite, colitis, HGE, etc. and your vet can run lab-work to help diagnose and treat. Hope he feels better soon!

It could be that the bully bone upset Tornado’s stomach leading to the diarrhea with blood in it. Given he’s otherwise acting normal, I can give you a home remedy for him. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts a couple of times a day for several days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet diet. If the diarrhea continues in the absence of food, he has diarrhea on the bland diet, there is still blood in his feces, he stops eating, starts vomiting, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, and/or becomes very lethargic, take him into a vet immediately. That could cause diarrhea depending on if it had any sort of flavoring/coating. With a puppy that young diarrhea could also be caused by G.I. parasites such as roundworms as well as any dietary changes which is common when they go to a new home. Alternatively diarrhea in puppies could be an early sign of parvovirus. If the diarrhea continues, becomes bloody, or Moose stops eating he should go to the veterinarian for exam.

Most dogs can tolerate a raw meal. The amount may have caused GI upset. Bad meat or fatty meat can also be the cause. Withhold food for 12-24 hours. Allow small amounts of water or unflavored PediaLyte. Resume feeding a bland diet (1:1 ratio of plain boiled boneless chicken and plain white rice). Feed in small, frequent amounts waiting at least one hour between feedings. Continue feeding until the stool is normal. Transition slowly to the regular diet. If the diarrhea doesn’t stop or your dog becomes lethargic or exhibits symptoms of abdominal pain, see your veterinarian.

It is possible it is the raw food diet diet causing Charley's bloody diarrhea. That's because raw meat carries bacteria that can make your dog sick. It could also be due to intestinal parasites, so make sure she is up to date on her deworming treatments. Withhold food for 12 to 24 hours then feed her a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in a commercial dry dog food for her. I would recommend feeding the commercial day dog food diet to her because there is no risk of poisoning from bacteria, either to her or you. If Charley isn't fully vaccinated, there is a chance she could have parvovirus, but given that she is happy and energetic, it's more likely related to her diet. If she does become very lethargic or the bland diet doesn't help the diarrhea, I would take her into the vet.

Bentley needs to be examined by the veterinarian today. Bloody diarrhea is always a reason to be examined. These pets are typically require treatment which could include antibiotics, probiotics, a bland diet and something to slow down the GI transit. Have him examined today.
