I gave my 12-week-old puppy dewormer two days in a row. Is she okay?

Great question! I personally like Panacur. It's an excellent dewormer that you can get OTC. It's a three day course of treatment, and Bella will need another course of treatment two weeks after the first to kill all the worms. She should then be dewormed monthly until she is six months old, and should be dewormed every three months thereafter. I hope this helps!

Hi and thanks for posting on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Generally speaking the active ingredients in most of these dewormers for dogs have a very wide margin of safety so giving another dose by accident is not likely to cause any significant issues.

We would have to know the exact medication you are talking about in order to tell you if that is safe. In general, deworming drugs have very high margins of safety, meaning you are unlikely to cause any serious issues by giving a little too much too soon. Cocoa looks like she has a severe respiratory infection as well and would benefit from a prolonged course of antibiotics for her severe nasal discharge. Assuming that the dewormer given was appropriate for the types of worms/intestinal parasites that she has, she would typically need to be dewormed again in 2 weeks and have a reaper exam to confirm that she is negative for intestinal parasites in approximately 3 weeks. Pyrantel is effective against roundworms, hookworms and whipworms. For Tapeworms, she would need praziquantel or a broad spectrum dewormer such as Drontal Plus. For Giardia she would need metronidazole and Panacur and for coccidia, Albon is the medication of choice. All of these parasites are zoonotic and contagious to people and other dogs as well. Diligent handwashing after handling is recommended, as is diligent environmental cleanup as she can easily become re-infected if she walks back over stool left in the backyard and licks her paws. Yes she sure can. It can take up to 1 week to rid the first round of worms in her system. Then as the worms in her system go through their 2 week life cycle (from baby worms to adult worms that you see in the poop) they should be treated again as a re-emergence of worms is seen. So the deworming schedule that I follow to ensure all worms (baby's and adults) are gone is as follows: 1) Deworm today 2) Deworm again in 3 days 3) Deworm again in 2 weeks But technically and most of the time you can get away with just doing #'s 1, and 3. You are under dosing Pumpkin if you are giving only 0.5 ml (cc) per day. Legally, we cannot provide dosing without a physical exam and a VPCR (veterinarian-patient-client relationship). Contact your veterinarian for an appropriate dose for a 14lb (6.3kg) dog. Panacur is typically given for 3 days, then repeated in two weeks. You can then consider a monthly preventative, such as HeartGard, Interceptor or Sentinel, that will protect against intestinal parasites and heartworm.

Hello, and thank you for your question. It is safe to administer at the frequency written on the bottle, but it is not essential. I typically deworm every 2 weeks, starting from age 2 weeks all the way to 16 weeks. Make sure to weight them each time prior to administering, so that you are giving them the correct dose.
