Pug puppy has roundworms. How much Panacur and for how long?

Panacur (fenbendazole) treats infections by hookworms, roundworms, tapeworms, and whipworms in dogs. Although tapeworms are listed, Panacur is ineffective against the tapeworm commonly found in dogs and cats. Piperazine only works for roundworms. Panacur treats roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, and tapeworms. We prefer to treat all the worms as dogs can often have low levels of other types of worms that may not show up in the fecal exam. You can try mixing the granules in yogurt or even a few table spoons of vanilla (not chocolate!) ice cream to hide the flavor.

It would be impossible to get a small enough dose measured out for a 1.5 pound kitten, therefore, it is not recommended. You can, however, use the Panacur liquid but that needs to be given once a day for 3-5 days in a row and is rather expensive. It can be purchased over the counter. Follow the dosing recommendations on the bottle. Follow dosing and frequency recommendations on the packaging but in general, the dose is 1.0mls per 10 pounds of body weight. You need to get a 1cc syringe and give 0.15mls right now as she is 1.5 pounds. You will need to increase the dosage each time as her weight will be increasing. Kittens dose of 0.5ml per 1kg body weight for 3 consecutive days. This is the dosage for the 10% panacur liquid suspension. 1kg = 2.2 lbs. 2.5 lbs = 1.3kg so at 0.5ml/kg you multiply 0.5 x 1.3 = 0.65 ml

Great question! I would get Ginger an OTC treatment now. You can give her Panacur, it's an excellent dewormer that kills roundworms, hookworms, and whipworms. It's a three day course of treatment and you will need to give her a second round of it two weeks after the first to kill all the worms. She should then be dewormed monthly until six months of age, and then every three months thereafter. I hope this helps :-)

Panacur is a three day course of treatment, so it would need to be given a couple days in a row. Drontal, for example, is a different dewormer and can be given as early as two weeks apart. Unfortunately I can't answer your question as to if she will be ok or not without knowing the name of the dewormer, but they are typically very safe with few sides effects even when dogs are given more than the recommended dose.
