What causes a puppy to cry in pain and struggle to walk for a week?

Your puppy may have an injury in his back, hips or knees, or something going on in his abdomen that is causing his pain. Because he is so young and there could be many different causes of his discomfort. I would recommend taking him into the vet to be examined as soon as possible. I would also watch him closely to make sure his stool is normal and that he is still wanting to eat and not vomiting. I hope this helps. Thanks reason package. Best of luck.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Bailey. I recommend that he see a veterinarian. He could have experienced a seizure and is taking a while to recover. If this is not the case, small breed dogs are prone to neck and/or back pain. This is a potentially serious situation as it can lead to weak or paralysis in certain cases. His veterinarian will be able to guide as far as treatment based on his exam findings. In the meantime, keep him quiet and do not give any over-the-counter pain medications as these can be toxic to dogs. I hope this information helps!

Hi! Thanks for entrusting us with Bailey's care today! This is possibly due to leg pain. This can be a sign of a few things that range from a muscle sprain to even a fracture. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian so that this can be further assessed which will likely include radiographs. Treatment will be dependent on findings though at the very least pain control medications can be prescribed. Good luck! Hoping for a speedy recovery!

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I am sorry that Beau isn't feeling well. Crying intermittently with no external injuries can be caused by a number of factors. If he is reluctant to walk or limping, then either a soft tissue injury in a joint/fracture/ or torn ligament is possible, however this you would expect to see some limping. Puppies can also get 'growing pains' and conditions of their joints, which affect all of their joints equally, so they are just reluctant to move. This can be incredibly painful and requires strong pain medication. The other common cause of crying out can be gastric pain. This can be caused by Beau getting into something he shouldn't have (bones, garbage, raw food, socks, underwear, etc) and his abdomen being very sorry. Usually with this you will see a reluctance to eat, possibly vomiting/diarrhea, and sometimes pain when you push on his abdomen. If this is the case I strongly suggest to stop the Deramaxx (hard on the gut, especially so young), and to have him re-checked by your vet and x-rays performed. An ultrasound may also be needed to make sure he doesn't have a peritonitis (infection in his abdominal cavity). He could also have a gastritis from worms, so making sure he is up to date on his worming is needed. A fever can also cause animals to feel unwell, so a full physical exam including his temperature is important. I would strongly suggest a re-visit with your vet, and they will likely need to do more tests, like an x-ray as mentioned, or if no answer is found there, or if Beau has a fever some bloodwork may be needed. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Bailey! I think Bailey may be in pain after the fall. He could have injured his back or neck and is afraid to go down the stairs because it hurts. Crying out randomly is common when dogs are in pain especially when their back and necks are injured. I would have Bailey seen by your Vet to see if he is truly in pain or traumatized behaviorally from the Hurricane. If there is no medical issue he may need to be started on anti-anxiety medications and re-training. I hope this helps and I wish Bailey a speedy recovery!

Unfortunately it sounds like Bailey has joint pain or arthritis possibly of the hips or spine. X-rays may help to provide more information on the exact site of the problem and it sounds like he requires additional pain relief from prescription anti-inflammatories. Acupuncture and chiropractic care can be helpful also and weight loss is definitely recommended to remove additional strains, my preferred option here is hills metabolic mobility diet which is supplemented with joint support, natural anti-inflammatories and promotes healthy weight loss whilst preserving muscle strength and fitness

She could be experiencing pain somewhere or even anxiety for some reason. Her veterinarian will do a thorough examination and assess her pain. From there, treatment and any necessary diagnostics can be discussed. Occasionally I have seen dogs with upper respiratory tract infections display odd behaviors at home instead of the standard coughing. Her veterinarian will check her throat.
