Is my puppy's coughing and frequent hiccups normal or serious?

Hiccups are normal in puppies, and they can have them on and off throughout the day. Typically, they occur after a meal, but they can occur at any time. Eventually, Bolt will grow out of them, so it's not something to worry about :-)

I wouldn't worry if it was just one-time, however I would monitor the puppies for any additional coughs or signs of respiratory issues (heavy breathing, vomiting, not wanting to eat or drink, turning pale/blue, etc) If the coughing happens again, or you are seeing other signs of illness, a vet visit right away is best.

Congratulations on your new puppy, I'm sure he is adorable! First, I would determine definitively if it is a cough or a reverse sneeze (you can find a video of this online). Reverse sneezing is not something to worry about, but a cough in a puppy can be, as it can be indicative of a heart issue, an infection, tracheal irritation or allergies, for example. I would try to video it and show it to his regular veterinarian for their opinion on if it is concerning or not. Good luck!

Puppy hiccups are quite common and typically become less frequent with age. Often this is due to gulping air with excitement or eating/drinking to fast. If the latter is the case you can try feeding on a plate with a cup or rock in the middle to make her eat around it thus slowing her down. You cannot really assess a dog's temperature accurately unless you take the temperature rectally. Hiccups in puppies can be normal. I would not be overly worried about it unless he is vomiting, not wanting to eat or showing other signs of illness. No need to worry! Hiccups are common in puppies. The twitching and making noises is normal too. Puppies and dogs dream, so these movements and sounds can be in response to dreams they are having. I have a dog who barks in her sleep sometimes, and her legs move. I like to think she is chasing something :-)

It is not normal for her to be coughing after playing but if she has a touch of kennel cough then that may be why she is coughing. I suggest you get her to your veterinarian for an exam to be on the safe side.
