Is it normal for my puppy to cough after running and playing?

I wouldn't worry if it was just one-time, however I would monitor the puppies for any additional coughs or signs of respiratory issues (heavy breathing, vomiting, not wanting to eat or drink, turning pale/blue, etc) If the coughing happens again, or you are seeing other signs of illness, a vet visit right away is best.

If your puppy is coughing, but otherwise feels happy, is eating, playing and very active it could indeed be kennel cough, or lung worm infection or other lung infection. I suggest you take him to a vet for an exam, and since the coughing is excessive, the vet can prescribe an antitussive, antibiotics if needed and anti-inflammatory medication, if necessary.

Hello, and thank you for your question. Kennel cough is definitely a possibility. Do you find that the coughing episodes only happen when they are playing together? Sometimes kennel cough can be exacerbated by excitement so it may still be related. I would try to minimize the play sessions over the next few days, and see if the coughing improves. If it does not, then I would recommend taking your rat terrier to the vet. Kennel cough is contagious so your puppy may need treatment as well if that it is the cause. It's not normal to throw up from running around and playing. It's possible Kona has some tracheal irritation from a low grade infection or allergies and the exercise caused it to become worse. Irritation in the stomach could also cause the same clinical signs. You may consider having Kona examined by the veterinarian to be on the safe side. Resting Kona for the next week may also help (no activity that makes her pant or run). Monitor her for any respiratory symptoms such as coughing, sneezing or a runny nose. Also monitor her for an GI signs like vomiting, diarrhea or not eating well. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.

Brady's cough could have a number of underlying causes, such as heart disease, a heavy parasite burden (some worms can migrate through the lungs), heartworm disease (highly unlikely due to Brady's age), tracheal sensitivity, kennel cough (still a possibility), among others. Since the cough has recurred, Brady should see his vet for a recheck exam and may need chest x-rays and a fecal exam to check for parasites. I hope he's feeling better soon!

Congrats on your new puppy, but I'm sorry Kasha isn't doing well! Typically you would see coughing all the time with kennel cough, and an increase of the coughing after exercise. It certainly could be a heart problem if this coughing only occurs after running and he tires easily, but there is a chance it could be a mild case of kennel cough or a respiratory infection. Until you can get him into the vet, rest him as much as possible. Don't let him run around, keep him quiet, and make sure he keeps eating and drinking. If he appears congested, you can try putting him in a room with a humidifier or taking him into the bathroom with you when you take a shower. The steam may help with any congestion. Best of luck.

That is not normal. Unfortunately, we do not have over the counter meds to clear up this symptom. You need to have him evaluated by your veterinarian. The big concern here would be laryngeal dysfunction or megaesophagus.
