My puppy gets hiccups every day. Is this normal or concerning?

My puppy gets hiccups quite often (at least once a day). Is this something I should be concerned about?

Puppy hiccups are quite common and typically become less frequent with age. Often this is due to gulping air with excitement or eating/drinking to fast. If the latter is the case you can try feeding on a plate with a cup or rock in the middle to make her eat around it thus slowing her down. There are a couple of things that can cause hiccups in puppies. These include eating and drinking too fast, and nervousness or excitement. I would try to calm him down by putting him in a quiet room by himself, and pet him gently to calm him down. It's ok that he only had one BM today; while puppies typically have multiple BMs throughout the day, there can be variations in it, and as long as he's having at least once, it's not something to worry about just yet. Hiccups are typically harmless, and you can monitor him if you'd like, and take him into the vet in the morning for a heath check if he's still having hiccups and you are concerned.

Although it seems unusual, it is actually very common for puppies to have hiccups. Typically it's related to either drinking or eating too fast or getting excited and inhaling air. This could be due to something he ate, it could also be due to a bloat, possibly due to drinking too much water too fast. for now just monitor him closely, in most cases this symptom will resolve without treatment within a few hours. if it last for a long time or if he seems to be getting worse- take him to your vet in order to get it checked and treated.

Why does my dog hiccup and burp so much, especially after eating?

Usually eating/drinking too fast or swallowing some air when eating/drinking. It is not anything I would be concerned about unless the hiccups persist for a long period or time or he starts vomiting. If he is a fast eater/drinker you can do things to make him eat/drink slower like put large, smooth rock into his bowl so he has to eat/drink around it. This will slow him down.

My dog has ongoing hiccups, should I be worried if no other symptoms?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Hiccups are spasms of the diaphragm and can occur from excitement, eating or drinking too fast (swallows air), stress or fatigue. If Axie is eating and drinking and NOT retching or vomiting I would think he should be fine. Also be sure he can rest comfortably and his belly isn't swollen. If he won't eat or is vomiting or retching you should contact the owners and take him to a Vet. If all else is fine maybe check in on him an lunch. Good luck!

My puppy eats fast, gets hiccups, and training is hard. What to do?

Hiccups are very normal in puppies, so I wouldn't be concerned about this :) If you think he is eating too fast, you can try putting his food in a puzzle toy like a Kong or a Kibble Nibble so that he has to eat more slowly - this is also a great way to keep puppies busy and give them something fun to do. Puppy training should be very positive with lots of rewards and short training sessions - Yogi is just a baby, so his attention span is going to be very short at this age. Use treats to show him what you want him to do, then praise and reward when he gets it right. Puppy proof your home to keep things out of his reach that he shouldn't have, and make sure he has lots of appropriate items to chew on - things like bully sticks, cow or pig ears, or rawhide chews are great for this. Puppies don't understand the concept of "doing wrong" - they only know that you're angry, and they act scared and submissive because they're frightened. So focus on showing him what you want him to do, and prevent him from making mistakes by managing the environment. Is it normal for my puppy to make clicking sounds when hiccuping?

What to do when my dog has hiccups and refuses to drink water?

I would try and exercise him and get him to go for a long walk or run / chase after a toy for a bit to see if this helps the hiccups go away.
