My puppy is coughing, choking, and vomiting milk. What should I do?

Pneumonia isn't guaranteed if milk is aspirated once, but it can happen and it would take a few days for it to develop. I would continue to monitor him, and should his breathing become raspy, his appetite decreases, or he become lethargic, I would take him into the vet right away.

Choking is usually from the milk building up in the back of the throat or going down the wrong pipe (food/liquid should go down the esophagus not the trachea which is the tube that leads in to the lungs). He may be taking the bottle too fast, slow him down, hold him up for a while after , even try a different puppy formula. Also be sure to check the roof of his mouth to be sure there isn't a cleft palate (hole in roof of the mouth). I wish you the best!

Hello, at 5 months of age the most common reason for coughing/choking is kennel cough. I suggest you get him to a vet for an exam and medications. This can progress to a pneumonia quickly and in a small 2# dog this can be extremely serious. I am very worried about this as you stated he was weak and lost his appetite. I don't suggest that you continue to perform any "first aid" for choking on a dog this small as you can easily injury him. I assure you that it is very unlikely he has something stuck in his throat. Hello there, Unfortunately, this sounds like he may have aspirated milk which can quickly lead to pneumonia in a pup this young. I would monitor Carter and his temperature very carefully (99.5-102.0 is normal) for signs of infection which include lethargy, weakness, labored breathing, and decreased appetite. If this occurs, I'd recommend getting Carter to the closest emergency veterinarian as soon as possible. At his young age and size, he can become dehydrated and very ill very quickly. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Shooter! I wonder if Shooter could be coughing with a terminal retch. With coughing sometimes they can even bring up white foam or yellow bile a the end of the cough. Since he is eating it makes be think he might not actually be trying to vomit. Try to catch the episode on video and have Shooter seen today or tomorrow by your Vet, before the weekend. If he is coughing he may have kennel cough and need antibiotics or cough suppressants. He is a young puppy so I don't think you should wait too long with the symptoms you are describing. I hope this helps and I wish Shooter the best!

Based on the history that you provide and the fact that Mila is not producing anything I would be more suspicious that she is coughing. Your veterinarian will be able to examine her and try to get a better idea of what is going on. They can then discuss further diagnostic or treatment options based on their assessment. I am sorry to hear about Bongo! I would recommend having him examined by a veterinarian for this issue to determine the underlying cause for the problem. We do worry in young dogs with these symptoms about a condition called megaesophagus, which is where the tube connecting the mouth to the stomach is abnormally wide and can cause food to not fully pass into the stomach and then to be regurgitated back up (often being mistaken for vomiting). We also worry about things like intestinal parasites, and things like dietary sensitivity/intolerance. The vet can examine her and get a detailed history on her symptoms and may recommend testing such as a fecal exam to check for parasites and x-ray to check for stomach or esophagus abnormalities.
