My puppy is choking and throwing up. Should I give her medicine?

Pet's info: Dog | Cocker Spaniel | Female | 6 months and 15 days old | 50 lbs

I have a cocker spaniel boxer mixed, she’s not even a year old yet. For about a month she will act like she’s chocking then start to throw up. I don’t think she has gotten into anything to make her sick, but can I give her anything that will help her stop vomiting?

I am sorry to hear about Bongo! I would recommend having him examined by a veterinarian for this issue to determine the underlying cause for the problem. We do worry in young dogs with these symptoms about a condition called megaesophagus, which is where the tube connecting the mouth to the stomach is abnormally wide and can cause food to not fully pass into the stomach and then to be regurgitated back up (often being mistaken for vomiting). We also worry about things like intestinal parasites, and things like dietary sensitivity/intolerance. The vet can examine her and get a detailed history on her symptoms and may recommend testing such as a fecal exam to check for parasites and x-ray to check for stomach or esophagus abnormalities.

Hi you are correct with Czar that his could be megaesophagus (ME) and less likely choking from something stuck in his throat. Choking would be a very acute and violent episode. ME is something that would continue to happen at most meals. There are some other medical reasons for Czar's clinical signs as well like a hiatal hernia (abnormal position of the stomach) and other defects he could have been born with. Regardless it is extremely important that he been seen by his veterinarian for a diagnosis. They can take an X-ray to look for ME, something stuck in the throat, or a congenital defect. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Shooter! I wonder if Shooter could be coughing with a terminal retch. With coughing sometimes they can even bring up white foam or yellow bile a the end of the cough. Since he is eating it makes be think he might not actually be trying to vomit. Try to catch the episode on video and have Shooter seen today or tomorrow by your Vet, before the weekend. If he is coughing he may have kennel cough and need antibiotics or cough suppressants. He is a young puppy so I don't think you should wait too long with the symptoms you are describing. I hope this helps and I wish Shooter the best!

My puppy is coughing, choking, and vomiting milk. What should I do?

Inhalation of even a small amount of milk in a tiny little puppy like this can be deadly if treatment is not instituted right away. Aspiration pneumonia is one of the most common causes of death in bottle babies. If you are noting significant coughing / choking, I would also keep an eye out for increased respiratory noises. This would include wheezing and raspy hoarse noises. If you hear this, it would probably be a good idea to stop feeding until you get him to the vet. At that point, the doctor will decide if providing additional nutrition orally is worth the risk, versus injectable nutrition. Hope this is help.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Chance. I recommend that he sees a veterinarian. If he is having abdominal contractions, this usually indicates vomiting. Regurgitation can also happen where the food passively slips up. In this case, there are not abdominal contractions and the puppy seems surprised when it happens. Finally, if a puppy has a respiratory tract infection, coughing can bring up a white foamy material or sometimes food if he gags. The veterinarian will examine him and determine which of these scenarios are occurring and how best to treat him. I hope this information helps!
