My 5-month-old puppy is coughing, weak, and won't eat. What's wrong?

Inhalation of even a small amount of milk in a tiny little puppy like this can be deadly if treatment is not instituted right away. Aspiration pneumonia is one of the most common causes of death in bottle babies. If you are noting significant coughing / choking, I would also keep an eye out for increased respiratory noises. This would include wheezing and raspy hoarse noises. If you hear this, it would probably be a good idea to stop feeding until you get him to the vet. At that point, the doctor will decide if providing additional nutrition orally is worth the risk, versus injectable nutrition. Hope this is help.

Puppies can be prone to viruses and bacterial infections that cause coughing with respiratory symptoms. The only way to know is to have a vet check her out. They can listen to her heart to see if there is a murmur or a congenital problem that is evident. They can x ray the heart to look for any changes. If every thing looks good, then they can get your medicine to treat the cough and underlying cause to help her

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Shooter! I wonder if Shooter could be coughing with a terminal retch. With coughing sometimes they can even bring up white foam or yellow bile a the end of the cough. Since he is eating it makes be think he might not actually be trying to vomit. Try to catch the episode on video and have Shooter seen today or tomorrow by your Vet, before the weekend. If he is coughing he may have kennel cough and need antibiotics or cough suppressants. He is a young puppy so I don't think you should wait too long with the symptoms you are describing. I hope this helps and I wish Shooter the best!

I think it is unlikely that he has treat stuck in his throat. This happens very, very rarely and honestly, in 25 years I have never seen this happen. It would only really happen if there was a motility disorder with his esophagus. The esophagus could be irritated if the treat went down "sideways", sure, but based on his age and your description of the clinical signs, my best guess is that he has kennel cough. It is probably just coincidence that the coughing episodes started with the treat ingestion. I suggest you get him to your vet for an exam. If he has kennel cough he is contagious to other dogs. Hello. So sorry to hear that Daddy is having this issue. Coughing can be due to many different things such as: 1. kennel cough 2. heart disease 3. collapsing trachea 4. foreign body 5. parasites (ie: lung worms, heartworms) 6. bronchitis/asthma 7. cancer 8. pneumonia I think you should get Daddy to your vet for an exam so you can get this figured out. My best guess is she has kennel cough. It is the most common reason for coughing in puppies. I can almost guarantee that there is nothing stuck in her throat and that it is not an allergy. Both are very unlikely. The vet should have checked her throat as you can usually make them cough with palpation of the trachea. She should be on antibiotics and cough medicine. I suggest you call the vet back and discuss kennel cough and treatment.

Less commonly, young puppies like this can have breathing issues due to a congenital defect like a heart problem or cleft palate. If you think he's having a hard time breathing normally, I would really recommend taking him to an emergency vet right away for an exam, as this may be a life-threatening problem. The vet can listen to his heart and lungs and may also take chest x-rays if needed to help diagnose the problem and get him started on appropriate treatment.
