My puppy chewed an iris root. What symptoms mean I need a vet?

Irises can certainly cause irritation to the mouth or stomach, and so commonly you will see drooling, vomiting, or diarrhea. Once they stop eating the irises, these symptoms should resolve in 24-48 hours. If not, she should be seen by a vet. However, it could be coincidence that the vomiting started around the time that you saw Lexi had been eating irises. Often, pets will eat grass or plants in an effort to soothe their stomach or induce vomiting. This would mean that there could be another cause of the vomiting, such as dietary intolerance, dietary indiscretion, food allergy, intestinal parasites, GI blockage, gastroenteritis, bacterial or viral infection, IBD, pancreatitis, among others. If Lexi has also had a poor appetite during this time, I would recommend that she see a vet as soon as possible for evaluation, as she could be dehydrated.

If he is acting normally now then it is likely that the toxin is out of his system. If you are sure that the plant was an Iris then it should be OK, however if you are unsure of which plant then I would recommend having Lou checked for his kidney function. Best of luck with Lou!

The toxic components in tulips is concentrated in the bulb but is also present (in less concentrated amounts) in the other parts of the plant as well. I think Rocky will be fine but symptoms you would see would be associated with irritation of the mouth and esophagus: drooling and maybe vomiting. If you didn't do so already, flush out his mouth really well. If vomiting occurs I would have him seen by a vet. I hope this helps and I wish Rocky the best!

Dogs will be dogs! Hyacinth bulbs and the entire tulip family aren't extremely toxic to dogs, but if consumed in large enough quantities they can cause GI upset and even some cardiorespiratory changes. In this case, if only one bulb was chew (not even swallowed) and you have yet to see any clinical signs, you probably shouldn't spend too much time worrying about it. If you want to be really careful, you can certainly go to the vet and start Cali on a decontamination protocol. This would certainly be the safest option but might be unnecessary. Inducing vomiting at this point in time would be pointless as the stomach has already moved anything that was eaten down into the intestines. You might also consider calling up the pet poison helpline and speak with the toxicology experts over there. They know their stuff and deal with this kind of thing every single day. Hope this helps. If your dog is now happy and running and playing and eating normally, then I wouldn't do anything else. If he is still vomiting, not eating, or seems sore in his abdomen, then he likely needs medications to help with his toxicity, and if vomiting and diarrhea is severe he might need IV fluids. If he is still unwell 1 hour after ingesting the plants, and not wanting to eat, then I would bring him to a vet right away. Best of luck with your little one, I hope he is feeling better.

Gardenia may cause mild gastrointestinal upset or hives if ingested. If Stussy ate a small amount, you may not see any signs, larger quantities may warrant a visit to your veterinarian. Good job, you did the right thing to get it out of his mouth and rinse it out. Without knowing the exact beetle I can't tell you for sure it's not toxic but generally they can irritate the mouth but not cause a serious problem. As with all toxins keep watch for vomiting, trouble breathing or facial swelling. Take him in right away if they are any abnormal symptoms.
