Puppy has bloody stool after deworming. Is it a serious concern?

Poor Luna! I can definitely understand being worried - it's always scary to see blood or other abnormalities in your dog's stool. The good news is, if she is eating and drinking normally, active, and not vomiting, it's extremely unlikely that she would have parvo or any other serious illness - puppies with parvo are usually very lethargic, not eating, and vomiting frequently. So it doesn't sound like this is likely to be an issue with Luna :) There are lots of things that could cause a milky substance like this with some traces of blood. Colitis, or irritation in the large intestine, can sometimes cause mucus with streaks or flecks of blood to be seen in the stool. This could also occur due to eating something she shouldn't have, or with a minor intestinal infection of some kind. She could also potentially have an infection in her anal glands, which are two scent glands located on either side of the rectum. If she is acting normal apart from this, it's not likely to be an emergency - but if the problem continues, it would be best to call your regular vet or take Luna in for a recheck exam to make sure that everything is okay.

This is usually dietary related and if no other signs are present at this stage, the problem could be managed by start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days. I would definitively recommend a veterinary check up if the signs persist or you notice diarrhoea, vomiting, lethargy or inappetence. If that is the case antibiotics may be needed. It is possible sweetie had a case of gastric upset. This could be due to something sweetie ate or got a hold of. IF she is eating, drinking, and no longer vomiting I would not be concerned. IF she continues to vomit or have blood in her stool i recommend takin her to a vet for medications to resolve the diarrhea.

This type of diarrhea could be due to G.I. parasites, which is not uncommon at all in puppies. This could also be related to the stress of a new home environment or diet change if it's occurred in the past week or so. There are over-the-counter deworming medication. However you may want to contact your veterinarian and see if they want you to bring in a fecal sample so they can tell you for sure if she has G.I. parasites. Generally speaking deworming medication it's fairly safe and would not be harmful if your puppy did not have parasites. However there are some G.I. parasites that require prescription strength deworming medication. But your veterinarian could do the fecal test and tell you if that is the case.

Hi there and thanks for posting! I wouldn't start to worry unless Harley starts experiencing an increase in bouts of diarrhea and vomiting. You can try feeding him a bland diet of chicken and rice with a few tablespoons of plain canned pumpkin (not the pie filling ) for a day or two and see if that helps firm up his stool a bit. If the diarrhea and vomiting continue happening, however, I would recommend having Harley seen by his veterinarian. Oh no. I would take him to a vet as soon as possible and have him checked for intestinal parasites and parvovirus. Either one could be the cause of his bloody discharge and need to be identified quickly so that he can start treatment right away. Howver, you can offer Pedialyte non-flavored to help keep him from getting too dehydrated. It is unfortunate that a pet you just adopted is ill; however, you can't help Shiner on your own and you should allow your veterinarian to care for him and his illness from here moving forward. This sounds like she may have intestinal worms. I recommend using a puppy deworming treatment dosed carefully for her weight and repeated as per directions. A probiotic is also recommended to promote recovery. If she develops a fever or loss of appetite she must be seen by your vet
