My 4-month puppy has bloody diarrhea and is very sleepy. What's wrong?

Hello, sorry to hear about Brutus. His chances really depend on what is going on with him. If he has parvovirus or other infectious diseases such as distemper then this could perhaps carry a poor prognosis for him. He should be evaluated by a veterinarian as soon as possible to determine the cause of his diarrhea and weakness. He may need to be hospitalize to receive fluids and medications through his veins. I would be very suspicious that your puppy may have contracted parvovirus. Please take her in to your local vet right away to get tested for parvovirus and also a fecal exam. If she has parvo she will need medicaitons from your vet, fluids and possible extensive care to get treat her conditon. Parvo is a very deadly virus in puppies even with treatment, but the pet has the best chance of survival the earlier you start treatment. Try offering her small amounts of Pedialyte non-flavored by mouth via syringe or small turkey baster to try and keep her hydrated. Puppies dehydrate very quickly when they are having loose stool. Having severe diarrhea like Beckett seems to be having can be very painful and uncomfortable. This may be why he is more lethargic than normal and why his stomach seems tense/contracted. It is great news that he doesn't have Parvo! Hopefully in addition to the antibiotics your vet also dewormed Beckett, as puppies often have intestinal parasites. If Beckett stops eating, begins vomiting, or the diarrhea isn't improving after about 48 hours of being on the medication I would recommend bringing him back to the vet to be reevaluated. Sometimes with severe diarrhea these little puppies can become dehydrated and need additional treatment like fluid therapy. Good luck!

This falls into one of these categories since you say that he isn't acting sick- Any clinical sign (diarrhea) that persists, worsens, or other signs develop (nausea, vomiting, lethargy, etc) this indicates that Colby should be seen by your veterinarian to assess what is going on. So I would just monitor his stools over the next 6-12 hours and watch for other signs. If things worsen, signs persist, or new signs develop, take him in immediately and let your vet take a detailed history and do a physical exam. They may advise some tests which could include fecal/blood tests, x-rays, etc to determine if a problem is present. A treatment plan can be made once a cause is determined or suspected. Bloody diarrhea can be caused by many things including intestinal worms, dietary problems, dietary indiscretion (eating things a dog should not eat), exposure to a toxin by ingestion, infection, etc. Good luck with Colby.

I am very sorry to hear that Theodore is experiencing these problems, I am sure it is very unsettling for you both. There are a number of potential causes of such clinical signs, including dietary indiscretion, pancreatitis, parasite infestation, infection, and ingestion of a toxin or poison. In young puppies eating something they shouldn’t have and gastrointestinal worms are very common. If you haven’t done a de-worming treatment with Theodore yet it would be a good idea to. Broad spectrum puppy safe dewormers are available at most pet stores and at your local veterinarian. Because you have only noticed these signs over the course of a few hours I would continue to monitor Theordore at home. Here is what you can do for him; Rest his gastrointestinal tract by holding back food for a few hours. Then you can continue with a bland and easily digested food of the boiled chicken breast and white rice diet and provide plenty of fresh water. I also find that boiled, mashed skinless sweet potato is helpful for diarrhoea. If Theodore does not improve, has profuse vomiting or diarrhoea, you notice more fresh blood, He seems lethargic, in pain or depressed I would advise a trip to the veterinarian immediately. I'm sorry both your puppies are sick! I would be very concerned about parvovirus, especially since they are both having diarrhea. Parvovirus is highly contagious, and deadly. Even though they were vaccinated at 7-8 weeks, this one vaccine is not enough to incur fully immunity. It take three rounds of vaccines in order to incur full immunity. Other possible reasons include a severe GI illness, eating something rotten, or intestinal worms. Because of their age, the risk of parvo, and the fact that Bentley has had bloody diarrhea for three days, they both need to see a vet immediately. I would see if you can borrow money from family and friends, and I can give you some resources that may help you afford a vet. You can see if your vet accepts payment plans, if there is a low cost clinic in your area, or you can apply for Care Credit online. There is also an organization called Red Rover that give grants for treatment of sick animals, and you can see if you qualify for one of their grants.
