Both my puppies have bloody diarrhea. Is it parvo? What to do?

If your puppy has parvo he is not likely to make it until the 18th with home treatment. Homeopathy has not been shown to help this disease. Parvo is very serious. Please get him to a vet. If you can't afford veterinary care then you should reconsider having a dog. I am sorry to be so harsh but this is the most frustrating part of this profession for veterinary professionals. The puppy should not made to suffer. I understand that people have financial constraints but having a puppy/dog is not an inexpensive endeavor. At this point he may be starting to break with parvo but since he is still eating and drinking he may just have intestinal parasites (worms) causing the bloody diarrhea. General dewormers often don't treat the parasites that cause bloody stools; a prescription product is needed once a fecal test determines what parasites are present. Either way, he needs to be seen by a vet. If he doesn't have parvo then you need to be sure to get him his vaccinations at the appropriate intervals so that he gets protected. You can get low cost vaccines at the local Humane Society or at your local VETCO clinic if there is a Petco near you. It very well could be parvo. I suggest you get her to your vet ASAP for an exam and testing. You really need to know if it is parvo or not. Either way, your vet will help you determine the cause of the bloody diarrhea and give you treatment options. Then, once this diarrhea is cleared up you can get her started on her vaccines. I would be concerned with Parvovirus which is highly contagious and often fatal if not properly treated. Given the duration of thee symptoms, however, it seems less likely. I would want to ensure, once well, they get at least 3 DAP vaccines 3-4 weeks apart, plus rabies. Sometimes I will see blood in diarrhea from hemorrhoids from straining against soft stool. In this case, treatment for the underlying cause of the diarrhea will be needed. This could include some Metronidazole, a probiotic, and further deworming. In these cases it is usually a small amount of blood whereas with Parvo it is a large amount of very bloody, foul smelling stool.

I am so sorry to hear about Darcy! This type of illness is so frustrating and I see it occasionally in my emergency practice. It could still be parvo, although false negatives are rare. It could be a toxin, anaphylactoid reaction, a parasite, HGE (hemorrhagic gastroenteritis), pancreatitis, a foreign body obstruction, or something else. The main thing with all of these is supportive care, so the iv fluids and are crucial. The clinical signs you describe are concerning when they occur in a puppy as they can be seen with serious gastrointestinal infections such as Parvovirus. Other possibilities include intestinal worms and dietary indiscretion, among other possibilities. The sooner these conditions are treated the better the outcome tends to be. For this reason, I recommend that you have Bruno evaluated by your veterinarian to check for these possibilities and to start therapy based on findings. At the very least they can address dehydration if present and start him on anti-diarrhea medications. Good luck! Keeping my fingers crossed for your boy!

I would be very suspicious that your puppy may have contracted parvovirus. Please take her in to your local vet right away to get tested for parvovirus and also a fecal exam. If she has parvo she will need medicaitons from your vet, fluids and possible extensive care to get treat her conditon. Parvo is a very deadly virus in puppies even with treatment, but the pet has the best chance of survival the earlier you start treatment. Try offering her small amounts of Pedialyte non-flavored by mouth via syringe or small turkey baster to try and keep her hydrated. Puppies dehydrate very quickly when they are having loose stool. This blood in his diarrhea could be due to intestinal worms, eating something rotten, a foreign body, parvo if he isn't vaccinated, or a severe stomach illness. He should definitely see a vet for this. As long as he is otherwise ok, it can wait until the morning. If he starts vomiting, has more bloody diarrhea, is very lethargic, stops drinking water, or is vomiting water, take him into an ER vet immediately. I hope this helps!
