My puppy has watery, smelly diarrhea and is sleeping more. What to do?

I would be very suspicious that your puppy may have contracted parvovirus. Please take her in to your local vet right away to get tested for parvovirus and also a fecal exam. If she has parvo she will need medicaitons from your vet, fluids and possible extensive care to get treat her conditon. Parvo is a very deadly virus in puppies even with treatment, but the pet has the best chance of survival the earlier you start treatment. Try offering her small amounts of Pedialyte non-flavored by mouth via syringe or small turkey baster to try and keep her hydrated. Puppies dehydrate very quickly when they are having loose stool. Thank you for submitting your question regarding California. Be sure to provide her with plenty of water so she does not become dehydrated. Based on her profile, she appears to be a very small dog. She will need to see her veterinarian for fecal testing and a medication. In the meantime, it is generally safe for a puppy to be fed half of a normal meal size. With severe watery diarrhea she is at an increased risk for dehydration and low blood sugar. Causes of diarrhea in puppies are: intestinal parasites, viral (parvo or distemper) or bacterial infections, dietary indiscretion, food allergy/intolerance, reaction to a new food/treat/table food. Sometime we never know the exact cause. Since she is so young and small I would take her to the Vet today. If you can get a stool sample bring it with you. If she isn't up to date on vaccines they may test her for parvo virus. The Vet can send her home with medications to make her better faster. I hope this helps and I wish Kisses a speedy recovery!
