My sick puppy has bloody diarrhea. What are his chances of recovery?

Whisky sounds very ill, and at his age, I would be concerned his symptoms are due to parvovirus. That would cause vomiting, diarrhea, and blood in the diarrhea (the red color of his poop). Very young puppies are extremely fragile, and his symptoms are quite serious. I would consider this a medical emergency and he needs to see a vet now. Please take him into one immediately.

Having severe diarrhea like Beckett seems to be having can be very painful and uncomfortable. This may be why he is more lethargic than normal and why his stomach seems tense/contracted. It is great news that he doesn't have Parvo! Hopefully in addition to the antibiotics your vet also dewormed Beckett, as puppies often have intestinal parasites. If Beckett stops eating, begins vomiting, or the diarrhea isn't improving after about 48 hours of being on the medication I would recommend bringing him back to the vet to be reevaluated. Sometimes with severe diarrhea these little puppies can become dehydrated and need additional treatment like fluid therapy. Good luck!

This blood in his diarrhea could be due to intestinal worms, eating something rotten, a foreign body, parvo if he isn't vaccinated, or a severe stomach illness. He should definitely see a vet for this. As long as he is otherwise ok, it can wait until the morning. If he starts vomiting, has more bloody diarrhea, is very lethargic, stops drinking water, or is vomiting water, take him into an ER vet immediately. I hope this helps!

Bloody diarrhea does happen with parvovirus infections as the virus destroys the healthy protective lining of the intestines and that causes blood to come inside the intestinal track. Protein loss and anemia can occur because of this which can cause a domino effect of problems with dogs battling Parvovirus. It is difficult to predict what the prognosis will be with Awesome, sight unseen. However, I can tell you prognosis does depend on whether the infection was diagnosed early or not, how old the dog was at the time of diagnosis, and level of treatment. Older puppies that have been diagnosed early and undergoing aggressive treatment have a much better prognosis. I hope this has helped and I wish Awesome a speedy recovery!

Yes, it was the right decision, without taking him to the vet he would have zero chance to survive, now at least he stands a fighting chance. he is very young so overall i would say his chances are not very good, but you never know, with the correct treatment he might perk back up and survive this.

Hello, sorry to hear about Brutus. His chances really depend on what is going on with him. If he has parvovirus or other infectious diseases such as distemper then this could perhaps carry a poor prognosis for him. He should be evaluated by a veterinarian as soon as possible to determine the cause of his diarrhea and weakness. He may need to be hospitalize to receive fluids and medications through his veins. This falls into one of these categories since you say that he isn't acting sick- Any clinical sign (diarrhea) that persists, worsens, or other signs develop (nausea, vomiting, lethargy, etc) this indicates that Colby should be seen by your veterinarian to assess what is going on. So I would just monitor his stools over the next 6-12 hours and watch for other signs. If things worsen, signs persist, or new signs develop, take him in immediately and let your vet take a detailed history and do a physical exam. They may advise some tests which could include fecal/blood tests, x-rays, etc to determine if a problem is present. A treatment plan can be made once a cause is determined or suspected. Bloody diarrhea can be caused by many things including intestinal worms, dietary problems, dietary indiscretion (eating things a dog should not eat), exposure to a toxin by ingestion, infection, etc. Good luck with Colby.
