My puppy is sick with bloody diarrhea, parvo negative. What to do?

I'm sorry both your puppies are sick! I would be very concerned about parvovirus, especially since they are both having diarrhea. Parvovirus is highly contagious, and deadly. Even though they were vaccinated at 7-8 weeks, this one vaccine is not enough to incur fully immunity. It take three rounds of vaccines in order to incur full immunity. Other possible reasons include a severe GI illness, eating something rotten, or intestinal worms. Because of their age, the risk of parvo, and the fact that Bentley has had bloody diarrhea for three days, they both need to see a vet immediately. I would see if you can borrow money from family and friends, and I can give you some resources that may help you afford a vet. You can see if your vet accepts payment plans, if there is a low cost clinic in your area, or you can apply for Care Credit online. There is also an organization called Red Rover that give grants for treatment of sick animals, and you can see if you qualify for one of their grants. Poor Daisy! If she's vomiting, acting lethargic, and not wanting to eat or drink much, this is quite serious and she needs to be seen by a veterinarian right away. I would recommend taking her in today for an exam. She may have an illness like parvo at this point, even if she tested negative recently - or she may have some other problem causing her current symptoms. Regardless of the underlying cause, these symptoms can be life-threatening in a puppy this age, so she needs veterinary care right away.

Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sorry to hear about Daisy. Contact your local rescue groups, humane societies, low-cost clinics in your area and seek help. Persistent vomiting, bloody diarrhea and lack of appetite are emergent clinic signs due to fluid/electrolyte losses. This leads to dehydration, weakness, and further downward deterioration unless the vomiting stops and the appetite returns. I would advise taking Daisy to your vet as soon as possible to have her evaluated. Many causes are possible including intestinal parasites, dietary indiscretion (eating things dogs aren't supposed to), other dietary problems, gastrointestinal inflammation/infection from various sources, toxin exposure, foreign body ingestion, GI ulceration, side effects from drugs or products used, or even problems outside of the gut including pancreatitis, liver/kidney problems, among many others. Your vet can get a detailed history and perform a thorough exam. Once done, a diagnostic plan and preliminary treatment plan can be started. Most likely a minimum database of fecal/blood/urine tests and some x-rays will be advised. Treatment will be focused on the cause but early treatment could include fluids/electrolytes, anti-nausea/vomiting medicines, acid blockers, etc. Good luck with Daisy.

It very well could be parvo. I suggest you get her to your vet ASAP for an exam and testing. You really need to know if it is parvo or not. Either way, your vet will help you determine the cause of the bloody diarrhea and give you treatment options. Then, once this diarrhea is cleared up you can get her started on her vaccines. Parvo tests, just like many other medical tests, are not 100% accurate, There are certain strains of the Parvovirus that will show up as negative 100% of the time. You must rely on the veterinarian's clinical experience with the disease and the dog's presentation to determine if Parvo is an appropriate diagnosis. Sounds like Blue should get some radiographs and blood work to see what else might be going on. Hope this makes sense.

Submit a stool sample to diagnose intestinal parasites. Supportive care (IV or subcutaneous fluids, anti-emetics, anti-diarrheals and parenteral nutrition) may be indicated until a diagnosis is reached or until your pup recovers.

I would be concerned with Parvovirus which is highly contagious and often fatal if not properly treated. Given the duration of thee symptoms, however, it seems less likely. I would want to ensure, once well, they get at least 3 DAP vaccines 3-4 weeks apart, plus rabies. Sometimes I will see blood in diarrhea from hemorrhoids from straining against soft stool. In this case, treatment for the underlying cause of the diarrhea will be needed. This could include some Metronidazole, a probiotic, and further deworming. In these cases it is usually a small amount of blood whereas with Parvo it is a large amount of very bloody, foul smelling stool.
