My puppy's poop is solid then soft. Is her food the problem?

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Female | spayed | 3 months and 21 days old | 31 lbs

My puppy has solid stool in the mornings, but as the day progresses her stool becomes very soft, almost to a liquid. She does not have diarrhea; she goes consistently 3-4 times a day at the same time, but her stool softens throughout the day. Is due to her large water consumption? Or is she not getting what she needs from her puppy food? She eats Blue Buffalo Large Breed Puppy Food. She is fed according to the label. Thanks!

Poor Addison! This could be caused by several things from large water intake, parasites, or even her dog food. Blue buffalo can actually be too rich for some dogs. I have also seen other complications from eating blue buffalo like bladder crystals and bladder stones. You some consider switching her to something With less protein like science diet, Royal canin, or Iams. If you want a food with a more “natural” approach, natural balance is also a good choice. When you switch her, I would slowly mix in the new food and gradually transition her over a 10 to 14 day period. Also, I would have your vet take a look at her. Your vet will be able to do a fecal to check for worms. I would make sure they also check for giardia and campylobacter as these are parasites/bacteria that commonly can cause similar issues but are difficult to diagnose. Lastly, i would get her started on some probiotics. I like ones made by vetriscience and Thorne. I hope this helps and she starts to feel better.

Blue Buffalo is not a good food despite what all their marketing ads tell you. You will find very few vets that think it's a good choice. She would be better off back on Purina and I'd suggest the Pro Plan Puppy for large breed dogs. I think you should switch her back slowly to the Purina. It is typical for dogs to poop a lot of Blue Buffalo as they don't really seem to absorb/digest much of it. Should I switch dog food after puppy had soft stools on Blue Buffalo?

I'm sorry Hulk has been having problems with soft stool! It could be that his diet was causing the diarrhea, but it could also be that he had a GI illness or ate something rotten. It's good that the bland diet has helped clear it up, and I would find another food to feed him besides Blue Buffalo. I am not a fan at all of it, there are many cases of dogs having GI issues on it. It also have very poor quality control over how it is made, and they have had a number of recalls. Brands of food I recommend include Royal Canin, Hill's Science Diet, Purina ProPlan, and Iams. You can get his used to one of these new brands by slowly adding it to the bland diet, and over time, increasing the amount of the new food and decreasing the bland diet until he is eating the bland diet only. Why is my 3-month-old puppy having bloody diarrhea and sleeping a lot?

I do not recommend Blue Buffalo diets at all. I think they are too rich, especially for a young puppy. Also Blue Buffalo does not follow AAFCO standards (nutritional guidelines). So, I don't think their food is properly balanced. All they do well is marketing. Just because it is expensive doesn't make it better. If I were you I would find another food that uses AAFCO guidelines. It will tell you on the bag where the nutritional information is. If you could call the shelter where you got her and ask what they were feeding that would be helpful. The other thing I would do is feed a probiotic as that will help repopulate the GI tract with good bacteria. Hope this helps! Best wishes!

My dog has digestive upset and vomiting. Is Blue Buffalo the cause?

I have had a lot of problems with my patients eating blue buffalo. I would off Howie plain boneless skin chicken breast white and rice for about 3 days then slow transition him from the chicken and rice to a new diet. I would look into natural balance, science diet, royal canin or iams. These are all great foods that are less likely to upset him stomach. If they have a sensitive stomach formula, try that. I would also keep him on his probiotic non-stop. Finally, before finished the giardia meds, I would have your vet recheck his poop sample to ensure it is completely gone. If he continues to vomit or if he starts having diarrhea again, I would have your vet take another look him. I hope this helps!

My puppy has soft stool. Should I switch her to Taste of the Wild?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Even though Addison's stool was negative for parasites I would still deworm her. Sometimes the adult worms do not shed eggs in the stool. Intestinal parasites and giardia are common causes of diarrhea in puppies. Otherwise I do not think it is wrong to change her diet. Chicken is the main allergic protein. Whether you want to go grain free, that is up to you. The meat protein is more important. I think Taste of the Wild is fine, I feed my dog one of their foods. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Beuno. Stool problems in young dogs are most commonly caused by parasites or diet. I recommend having his veterinarian perform in depth stool testing to assess for parasites or other causes of gastrointestinal infections. If there is nothing found, then you may need to consider a diet change. I would recommend a prescription gastrointestinal diet that is formulated for use in puppies such as Purina Veterinary Diet EN. This is a highly digestible diet and many times can resolve the symptoms. You need to be careful with grain free diets as some have been associated with heart disease. They also tend to be quite high in carbohydrates which can lead to weight gain over time. I hope this information helps!

My 5-month Boxer puppy has soft, runny stools. Is her food the cause?

It sounds as if Ali may be dealing with a dietary sensitivity / indiscretion from the food she is on. About 65% of the time in cases of vomiting / diarrhea in dogs that are otherwise acting normal, the diet is the cause or an imbalance of the normal bacteria in the intestines. I would recommend transitioning to a completely different food altogether such as Science Diet, Royal Canin, Purina One or Natural Balance and feed this new diet for at least 4-6 weeks. If the diarrhea does not resolve after trying 2 - 3 different foods, I would have Ali examined by a veterinarian so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made.
