My 3-month-old puppy is bloated and gassy. What home remedies help?

Poor girl. Penelope likely had a large worm load that is going to take some time to go away. Her large bloated belly is likely the remaining worms in her system. Continue to give her the dewormer as instructed and you can also add some fiber to her diet by giving her 1-2 tsp of canned Pumpkin (not the filing) in her food daily for 7-10 days or as needed. This will help harden her stools and also help regulate her bowels. The gas she has also is directly related to the worms, so once the worm load decreases this will improve as well. She also likely will appear gassier as the worms work their way out her system. As long as she is eating well and not vomiting still she will likely be fine. If she is fully vaccinated, I would recommend taking her on 20-30 minute brisk walks and gentle tummy rubs to help her naturally decrease the gas in her stomach. If this doesn't work, then call your vet to discuss possible anti-gas medication that he can prescribe for her. I hope she feels better soon!

HI, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Puppies tend to have a more bloated belly. Intestinal parasites are usually the main cause of this. Sometimes the intestines are more gassy in puppies too. I would give the dewormer some more time. If there is no improvement by a week i would have her examined and bring a stool sample with you. Sometimes changing puppy food can help as well. She is due for vaccinations so a Vet exam should be happening soon anyway. Good luck!

Some of what you are describing for Prince sounds like normal puppy behavior. I do not recommend any over-the-counter people medications unless your regular veterinarian gives you the recommended dosage and frequency that Prince could have. You can try to slow down his eating habits by purchasing a special bowl. You should be able to find some at a local pet store or online. It might be wise to pre-moisten and expand the dry kibble you are feeding with warm water so that it doesn't expand after eaten and cause some GI distress. If Prince develops diarrhea or vomiting, have him examined by your veterinarian to ensure that he hasn't picked up any kind of infection such as a parasite or virus.

SHe is likely gassy because of indigestion from the food or she could also have intestinal parasites. I would recommend changing the quality of food if that is an area for improvement. Some good qualty foods to consider are Royal Canin, Hill's Science Diet, Eukanuba or Purina. This can help improve Junie's digestion. I would also recommend exercising Junie daily to help her GI tract motility. And lastly giving her a probiotic daily can help support her GI flora. Excessive bad bacteria and not enough good bacteria leads to excess gas production. I hope that your puppy Junie resolves her gassy state soon. Best wishes and take care.

Hello sorry to hear about Lilly. Things I would worry about with severely distended GI is a foreign body that may be causing obstruction. Other causes such as an infectious gastritis or enteritis can also cause severe gas. Finally, any inflammation of the GI tract secondary to dietary indiscretions could also cause uniform gas dilation and ileus (decreased GI motility). I would consider rechecking x-rays to compare the pattern of the gas in a couple of hours. Additionally, if Lilly is vomiting or having diarrhea or a decreased appetite, I would recommend having her re-evaluated if the signs persist. If this is gas alone, although it may be very uncomfortable for Lilly, know that it will pass on its own within several hours. However, if Lilly seems to be doing worse, have her evaluated immediately. Hope this helps and best of luck.

If she hasn't been wormed then it is likely due to intestinal worm infestation, tomorrow at the vet's they will deworm her and probably vaccinate her as well, the deworming should resolve those symptoms.

If her breathing is normal and gums are normal pink, then there is a good chance this is just a worm overload. Sometimes it takes 2 treatments done 2 weeks apart to get rid of worms in young puppies. Ascites would almost always cause a pet to be lethargic and act ill. As long as her energy is good and everything else is fine, it is ok to monitor her for now and have your vet check her for parasites when they get back out of town.
