My dog has a bloated, gassy stomach. What causes it? What can I do?

Poor Cabella! You could try feeding her a bland diet of plain boiled chicken and rice for the next few days to help settle her stomach. If she hasn't been dewormed recently, I would also suggest doing this as intestinal parasites are a very common cause of a bloated belly and excessive gas or loose stools in a puppy this age - you can get a broad-spectrum dewormer labeled for use in dogs, such as Strongid or Panacur, at most pet stores. Follow directions on the package label for dosing, based on Cabella's weight. If these things don't help, or if she develops any other symptoms such as vomiting, acting lethargic, or not wanting to eat, I'm afraid that she will really need to see a vet as these can be signs of a more serious problem. I hope she's feeling better soon!

I am so sorry to hear that your pet is so ill. Build up of gas in the stomach is often times caused by either bacteria sitting in the gut (if the intestines are not distended), or due to a foreign body obstruction or partial obstruction (if the intesitnes are also distended). If she has an underling heart condition, this further complicates things. In order to best help you we will need to go over the details of Elsie's condition to get all the necessary information and details of her treatment. This is a very complicated matter and we want you to get all the information needed to make an educated decision moving forward with Elsie. Also I am not sure what symptoms she currently has because you only mentioned that she is "sick". This can mean a lot of different things and should be clarified before recommending any additional treatments for her. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I recommend taking Poli to the vet with a fresh stool sample to rule out intestinal parasites and other health concerns. If negative, I would recommend changing her diet to something less rich. In the US, I recommend Science Diet or Purina One Smartblend. There may be something in her current diet that is affecting her GI tract so she may need something new. Good luck and kisses to Poli!

I’m so sorry to hear about Murphy! Unfortunately these cases are hard because we don’t know what the underlying cause is. Does gastric distress include vomiting and diarrhea or just vomiting? Possible next steps might be a parvo test, bloodwork (including a pancreatitis check), or an abdominal ultrasound. Unfortunately, It could be a toxin, an anaphylactoid reaction, or several other things that are not easy to diagnose. Certainly symptomatic care with anti nausea medication, anti-diarrheal medication, and IV or subcutaneous (under the skin) fluids are the mainstay of treatment for these types of symptoms regardless of cause. Head into the emergency vet if Murphy had vomited more than twice or if he seems listless, weak, or mentally dull. Best of luck to you and Murphy!

If you think Flower's belly is bloated / enlarged, I would have a veterinarian examine her and have x-rays taken of her abdomen. Things that would make a belly distend range from fluid in the abdomen, large amounts of gas (bloat) and tumors. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. A distended abdomen can be due to many things. Here is a list of some possibilites: 1. constipation 2. bloat - I agree that after 12 hours this is unlikely 3. abdominal mass/tumor 4. abdominal fluid (ascites) 5. pyometra - infected uterus; common since she is not spayed I would be worried about this even though she seems to be "normal". If it is an "open" pyometra she may not be feeling as ill as if it were "closed". 6. internal parasites (ie: roundworms, hookworms, etc) Those are the ones I can think of off the top of my head. I suggest you get Nexa to your vet for an exam. Some simple blood testing and a couple x-rays could rule in/out most of the things I have listed above. Hope this helps. Best wishes.

It definitely does look bloated. It could be from eating a large meal or from intestinal parasites (worms). I would have your vet take a look a him. They will likely want to do a fecal on him to check for worms and if needed, they will deworm him. I hope this helps!
