My dog is bloated and gassy after deworming for worms. What helps?

Penelope has been sick since Tuesday night. She threw up for two days and threw up a round worm. I called my vet and was told to give her safeguard for horses for 3 days. The first day I gave it to her she got bloated and gassy. She is still going to the bathroom and her poop has not changed. She is much better now, but still pretty bloated and very gassy when its bed time, could it have been from the meds? Can I give her anything to relieve some pressure??

Poor girl. Penelope likely had a large worm load that is going to take some time to go away. Her large bloated belly is likely the remaining worms in her system. Continue to give her the dewormer as instructed and you can also add some fiber to her diet by giving her 1-2 tsp of canned Pumpkin (not the filing) in her food daily for 7-10 days or as needed. This will help harden her stools and also help regulate her bowels. The gas she has also is directly related to the worms, so once the worm load decreases this will improve as well. She also likely will appear gassier as the worms work their way out her system. As long as she is eating well and not vomiting still she will likely be fine.
If she is fully vaccinated, I would recommend taking her on 20-30 minute brisk walks and gentle tummy rubs to help her naturally decrease the gas in her stomach. If this doesn't work, then call your vet to discuss possible anti-gas medication that he can prescribe for her. I hope she feels better soon!

HI, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Puppies tend to have a more bloated belly. Intestinal parasites are usually the main cause of this. Sometimes the intestines are more gassy in puppies too. I would give the dewormer some more time. If there is no improvement by a week i would have her examined and bring a stool sample with you. Sometimes changing puppy food can help as well. She is due for vaccinations so a Vet exam should be happening soon anyway. Good luck!

This presentation is very likely due to worms, which are causing the bloat. With appropriate medications the worms will die (you will find them in the feces dead or still alive) and the bloat will progressively disappear. Mild constipation will resolve as well when parasite infestation resolves.

This may be a sign that your puppy still had a good amount of worms which now have been killed with the second dose of wormer. This can make a bit of indigestion or cause a bit of gas to form. I think your puppy will be fine. By tomorrow his abdomen should be less bloated again.

Poor Cabella! You could try feeding her a bland diet of plain boiled chicken and rice for the next few days to help settle her stomach. If she hasn't been dewormed recently, I would also suggest doing this as intestinal parasites are a very common cause of a bloated belly and excessive gas or loose stools in a puppy this age - you can get a broad-spectrum dewormer labeled for use in dogs, such as Strongid or Panacur, at most pet stores. Follow directions on the package label for dosing, based on Cabella's weight. If these things don't help, or if she develops any other symptoms such as vomiting, acting lethargic, or not wanting to eat, I'm afraid that she will really need to see a vet as these can be signs of a more serious problem. I hope she's feeling better soon!

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Dewormers will treat different types of worms depending on which dewormer is used. If you feel Percy's stomach is bloated, you can get a fecal sample checked for eggs and which type, to determine if he has worms and what type. If he is eating and pooping and playing normally, you are safe to just wait and deworm on the 16th, however if he is vomiting, having diarrhea, or seems weak and tired, then I would get him checked by a vet and try a different dewormer. My dog is constipated and crying after dewormer. Should I worry?

Hello. If Nero was severely infested with intestinal parasites/worms, it is possible that the dead worms are causing a blockage. You can try feeding him a teaspoon of canned pumpkin with each meal as this can act as a mild laxative. Make sure there is no accumulation of feces at the rectum that can literally plug him up. Sometimes sitting in a warm bath of Epsom salts can help relieve a blockage, too. If he is still having problems passing feces tomorrow, please have him seen by your veterinarian. Deworming can cause an upset stomach for about 24 hours, it's not uncommon at all, Rambo might even experience vomiting, try not to give him more food than he usually has though as he could get too bloated.
