Why does my puppy bite and sleep so much? How can I train him?

You are likely describing teething which is basically a normal type of behavior when puppies are growing up and it is secondary to mouth discomfort as teeth are growing. I recommend that you get Lucy teething type toys which you can get at your local pet store or online. Anytime that he tries to nibble at you, you say no and give him the toy. This is likely going to resolve the issue. Puppies do tend to sleep for long periods of time and that is normal and expected so as long as she is not showing any other signs of being sick like vomiting or anorexia, it is ok to continue to monitor that. One recommendation I have for all new puppy owners is to go to a puppy training class. Even if you've raised puppies before it's always a great refresher course for you and Olie has never been to school before. Right now she's probably a little bit too young, you do want to make sure she's had several set of vaccinations and your veterinarian says she is healthy enough to go to class. It is normal for very young puppies to sleep most of the day with periods of activity in between, and if he seems otherwise perky, is still eating and drinking well and doesn't have any vomiting or diarrhea this is likely normal. For socialization, it would be best to wait until he has had vaccines or is only around other dogs whose vaccine history you know so that he can't contract an illness that could potentially kill him. Once he's had enough vaccines you can also enroll in a puppy kindergarten together so that he can learn some basic manners and socialize in a safe environment with other dogs his age. Bite inhibition can be taught by you, and looking up bite inhibition training can help. It is very normal for puppies to be mouthy: want to chew on your fingers, play with your fingers like they are toys, jump up and try to grab your fingers, nip, etc. It isn't normal to do it aggressively. Hi and thank you for your question on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Having a puppy is sometimes a lot like having a baby or a small child! This is okay and normal behavior for a puppy to have bursts of energy at all the wrong times it seems. Her energy will start to settle out and habits become more regular as she gets a little older. Maintain a regular schedule for Biscuit (regular times for eating, potty, etc) and she will adapt gradually to that. Be patient!
