My puppy is biting everything and sleeping too much. What should I do?

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Puppies often bite because they are teething, so you have to allow them to chew and train them to chew appropriate things. One tactic is to yell 'ouch' loudly whenever he bites your hand, and replace your hand with something that is OK to chew on. We often find it 'cute' when puppies mouth our hands, and this trains them it is OK to bite, so you have to stop that and never let them mouth your hand even if it isn't hurting. Also, puppies do spend a lot of time sleeping. This is normal, as long as he is energetic and playful when he is awake, then just let him sleep. Puppies need lots of sleep. Best of luck with Oreo!

Hello. Chewing at this age is very normal & is a sign of teething behavior. Puppies also learn in this manner, too. It is your job to provide Lucy with appropriate chewing substrates & gently guide her to avoid those which may be harmful ( electric cords, house plants, items that are small enough to be swallowed ). Make sure shoes, eyeglasses, watches, tv remotes, jewelry are picked up or not left on low tables ( can you guess what I have lost in the past !). Kong toys are tough products made for dogs & puppies that can be packed with tasty treats such as kibble & peanut butter. This should keep Lucy busy for hours. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Lucy. At 6 months of age, most puppies are finishing up teething. Teething stimulates puppies to bite and chew as their teeth are erupting. Hopefully, this behavior will decrease as she should have the majority of her adult teeth by now. When she bites you, do not engage her, but redirect her attention to something positive such as a toy. Do not play with her with your hands, not even tug-of-war type toys. If she still goes after your hands even after you have given her a toy, walk away. She needs to learn that that type of behavior is not acceptable and she will lose your attention.
