Can I take my puppy to the beach if he's not fully vaccinated?

Pet's info: Dog | Toy Poodle | Male | unneutered | 2 months and 9 days old | 3.30693 lbs

Hi is it okay to take my puppy to the beach even though his vaccine isn't complete yet? Me and my family are going to the beach this week and I don't want to leave him alone at house. Thank you so much.

Yes, he can go to the Beach. He shouldn't be taken to dog parks or be allowed to play with unvaccinated dogs. Keep him on sidewalks and roads. Be careful on the beach that he doesn't drink the salt water or eat the sand.

It is best to wait until he is fully vaccinated. That one set of vaccinations is not enough to keep Rex protected. If you want to socialize him it is best to take him to puppy classes or puppy play time session with other puppies that have also been vaccinated. Personnel will have checked all the documentation for all the puppies and the facility will be clean. When you take him to a dog beach you have no idea if any other dogs in the area have been vaccinated, dewormed, etc.

After he has had all his vaccines at 16 weeks of age he should be fine to go to the dog beach.

I do not recommend you take a puppy this young anywhere where there has been, or will be, a lot of dogs until he has been fully vaccinated at 16 weeks of age. You are taking a huge risk. It is not worth it. He will have plenty of time to enjoy the beach once he is older. I would also be worried about him swallowing too much salt water as that can be very toxic to a small pup.

Unfortunately I would recommend not letting your puppy on the beach until she is at least 4 months old and has had all of her vaccines. Until a puppy is old enough to have all of their vaccines, they are at risk for very dangerous diseases like parvo, distemper and kennel cough. The puppy can also pick up things like intestinal parasites from waste other dogs may have left on the beach. Better to be safe than sorry!

I would recommend not taking Bailey out on public beaches or parks or anywhere where other dogs may be until she has received her full series of vaccines, usually completed between 16 to 20 weeks of age. It depends on your area. I do recommend outside training with dogs that were vaccinated once. Although, still caution people because the puppies are not fully vaccinated. Make sure he does not come into contact with other dogs unless you know the people and their dogs are healthy and up to date on vaccinations. Is my 3-month-old puppy safe at the dog park with incomplete shots?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! For his own safety and the safety of other dogs, it would be best to wait until he has received his complete first year round of vaccines including the second parvovirus vaccine which usually is given at around 4-5 months of age though that depends on when they received the first set of vaccines. This should be soon anyway so you should be able to take him to the park fairly soon. He is adorable!!! Good luck and have a great day!

Thank you for submitting your question regarding your puppy. It would be safest to bathe him at home until he is fully vaccinated. This would limit his risk of acquiring any infectious diseases. If you really want to take him, then I recommend carrying him into the facility. Place him in the tub, bathe him and then carry him out of the store. Do not allow him to interact with other dogs or go to the bathroom outside the store where other dogs go. Many infectious diseases are spread through the feces. I hope this information helps!

Is it safe to walk my 7-week-old puppy after his first shots?

Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach and congratulations on your new puppy! Unfortunately, Maximus is not fully vaccinated at this point, so he should not be going outside. Depending on your state, he can be fully vaccinated by 12 or 16 weeks. If this was his first round of shots, he will need a booster in 2-4 weeks and then his Rabies vaccine at 12-16 weeks as well as his last booster. Maximus should have minimal contact with other dogs (even where other dogs have gone to the bathroom) as you can’t be sure they are not carrying any of the viruses that Maximus is not vaccinated for that can make him very sick. I know it is difficult to keep a large active puppy inside, but your vet can work with you to have Maximus fully vaccinated in a reasonable amount of time.
