My puppy is vomiting after eating a yucca plant. Vet is out. What now?

Fortunately most cacti are not toxic but they can cause stomach and intestinal irritation leading to vomiting and diarrhea. I would with hold water for 6 hours then restart with sips of water frequently. I would fast for 12 hours and if there is not vomiting during the fast or with the small amounts of water then start a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice as small frequent meals for a few days. Feed 1 cup per 20 lbs per day. If the vomiting is excessive or he won't eat I'd have your Vet examine him. Have a great weekend!

If he keeps it down, you can offer more water and small amount of bland food (cooked chicken or other lean meat) in the next 1-2hrs. If he is taking the food and keeping all down you should give him more every 2-3hrs. However, if Chapo continues to vomit, you should take him to your local vets for an appointment today. Vomiting in otherwise healthy dog is usually caused by stomach upset from gastrointestinal infection, inflamed pancreas, abdominal pain.

Marley is probably suffering from gastritis and an over distention of his stomach from eating some much food all at once. The stomach lining is probably very irritated and is making him vomit up anything else he eats or drinks. I would recommend withholding food for about 12 to 24 hours. If he does not vomit during that time then you can start to re-introduce a bland diet, like plain boiled chicken and rice, and see if he can keep that down. If he is not able to stop vomiting, becomes lethargic, or has diarrhea you will need to take him to the vet to be examined. Small puppies like this can get dehydrated rapidly and he may need fluids support and medication to help stop the vomiting. I hope this helps. For any GI upset, a bland diet (such as white rice and plain boiled white meat chicken) that is easily digestible is a good option. If chicken isn't an option for her, very lean ground beef browned in a skillet with no oil is another good option. If she continues vomiting, doesn't want to eat or otherwise starts acting ill, then I would recommend having her evaluated by her regular veterinarian. Good luck!

Also, please monitor him at home for the next 2-3 days for signs of lethargy, abdominal pain, lack of stools, vomiting as these symptoms are common in gastrointestinal obstruction. If you notice any of the signs, you should take Iggy to your local vets right away.

Feed her a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If she refuses to eat the bland diet, she vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away. If a pet is vomiting, it is best to withhold all food and medicine for at least 12 hours. Afterwards, a bland diet can be offered in small, frequent amounts. It is never recommended to give human medications to your pet without the advice of your veterinarian. Some medications can be toxic or may complicate any underlying condition. If she can keep the water down, continue with small frequent amounts. No more than a couple tablespoons (20-30 mls) at a time. Have her examined by your veterinarian in the morning. The foods she ate can certainly cause vomiting, but it is best to have serious illness or foreign body ruled out by the vet.
