My dog is throwing up a lot and not drinking water. What should I do?

Chronic vomiting, has multiple causes but may cause an electrolyte imbalance which could account for the symptoms you are seeing. If he is drinking more water than usual, he should be seen by your vet for an exam and bloodwork to rule out kidney disease, diabetes or other GI issues. When a pet is vomiting, withhold food for 12-24 hours. Allow small amounts of water or unflavored PediaLyte. Resume feeding a bland diet (1:1 ratio of plain boiled boneless chicken and plain white rice). Feed in small, frequent amounts waiting at least one hour between feedings. If he won't eat, serve the food warm or mix in a teaspoon of baby food to stimulate the appetite. If the vomiting stops, transition slowly to the regular diet. If not or if the appetite does not return, then you will need to see your veterinarian.

Causes for vomiting and not eating are: viral or bacterial infections, liver or kidney problems, cancer, pancreatitis, dietary indiscretion (ate something gross), ate something that is stuck, toxin ingestion, new food/treat/table food or the broth. Any new food could cause an upset stomach. i would with hold water for 6 hours and food for 12 hours. If Odie continues to vomit during the fast he should see a Vet. If there is no vomiting for the first 6 hours, offer small amounts of water. If he holds down the water then start a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice as small frequent meals at the 12 hour mark. Feed 1 cup per 20 lbs per day for 3-5 days. If he won't eat or continues to vomit he needs to see a Vet for an exam, blood work and belly X-rays. I hope this helps and i wish Odie the very best!

I would suggest to withhold food for the next 8 hours and then start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days. I would definitively recommend a veterinary check up if the signs persist or you notice diarrhoea, more vomiting, lethargy or persistent inappetence. Poor Jake! It's quite serious that he is vomiting after drinking water, and I would not feed him at this point in time. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, and if the vomiting stops, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. Should Jake keep vomiting water, vomits in the absence of food, vomits the bland diet, refuses to eat the bland diet, develops diarrhea, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet immediately.

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I am sorry that Vito isn't feeling well. What you are describing is very worrisome for an obstruction/blockage in the gut. This can happen when dogs eat socks/underwear, balls, toys, cardboard, peach pits, etc. I strongly recommend you bring him to a vet right away for x-rays. Surgery might be required as a life-saving measure. If the x-rays are clear, your vet will be able to give a medication to stop the vomiting and help, as this sounds like it is either an obstruction, or a severe gastritis that requires medication and possibly IV fluids to correct. I'm so sorry to hear that Boomer is sick! It is very concerning that Boomer is throwing up everything including water. The vomit being coffee colored makes me concerned about a GI ulcer or serious GI bleed. This can occur secondary to toxin ingestion, kidney failure, or overdoses of some medications. I strongly suggest you take Boomer to an emergency veterinarian so he can be examined and supportive care can be started. He will likely need blood work to determine what the underlying cause. Unfortunately without emergency care Boomer is at risk of becoming dehydrated and the illness worsening. You can try a bland meal of boiled chicken and rice however I don't think this will resolve the issue so I'd still encourage you to seek veterinary care for Boomer as soon as possible. Marley is probably suffering from gastritis and an over distention of his stomach from eating some much food all at once. The stomach lining is probably very irritated and is making him vomit up anything else he eats or drinks. I would recommend withholding food for about 12 to 24 hours. If he does not vomit during that time then you can start to re-introduce a bland diet, like plain boiled chicken and rice, and see if he can keep that down. If he is not able to stop vomiting, becomes lethargic, or has diarrhea you will need to take him to the vet to be examined. Small puppies like this can get dehydrated rapidly and he may need fluids support and medication to help stop the vomiting. I hope this helps.
