Puppy ate too much, now throwing up yellow and can't keep food down.

Pet's info: Dog | Siberian Husky | Male | unneutered | 3 months and 10 days old | 15 lbs

My puppy got into dog food bag and ate so much he got bloated. that same night he threw it up and cleared his system, but he began to throw up yellow after that. he drinks water but can’t seem to hold his food dow now. I am not sure what to do. He stopped throwing up for almost a full day until last night at 1:30am, he tossed up some more food I tried to give him. he doesn’t like pumpkin very much. his poop is normal and he’s not dehydrated but it’s hard for him to always drink water

Marley is probably suffering from gastritis and an over distention of his stomach from eating some much food all at once. The stomach lining is probably very irritated and is making him vomit up anything else he eats or drinks.

I would recommend withholding food for about 12 to 24 hours. If he does not vomit during that time then you can start to re-introduce a bland diet, like plain boiled chicken and rice, and see if he can keep that down.

If he is not able to stop vomiting, becomes lethargic, or has diarrhea you will need to take him to the vet to be examined. Small puppies like this can get dehydrated rapidly and he may need fluids support and medication to help stop the vomiting.

Marley needs to see a vet immediately. It's quite serious that she is vomiting so frequently for so long, and is getting worse. You are correct she could have eaten something in the garbage causing the vomiting, such as rotten food or something that could be obstructed in her GI tract. She needs veterinary care now. Please take her into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. The information to reach that vet is found on a clinic's answering machine or website.

Marley sounds VERY sick. There are many reasons ranging from toxins, to bacteria to intestinal blockage. She needs to go to the veterinarian ASAP (it sounds like she's hurting) for blood work and radiographs. Once the doctor knows whats going on, she will be able to help Marley feel better. Poor Marley! It could be the hot dog has upset his stomach, leading to the vomiting. I can give you a home remedy to try to see if that helps. My puppy is vomiting yellow after eating human food. What should I do?

If a pet is vomiting, it is best to withhold all food and medicine for at least 12 hours. Afterwards, a bland diet can be offered in small, frequent amounts. It is never recommended to give human medications to your pet without the advice of your veterinarian. Some medications can be toxic or may complicate any underlying condition. If she can keep the water down, continue with small frequent amounts. No more than a couple tablespoons (20-30 mls) at a time. Have her examined by your veterinarian in the morning. The foods she ate can certainly cause vomiting, but it is best to have serious illness or foreign body ruled out by the vet.

My puppy vomited yellow bile after too many treats. What should I do?

Poor Gulliver! He could have an upset stomach from too many treats. If he is otherwise acting fine, you could withhold food for the day and then try a bland diet of boiled chicken and white rice and see how he does with that. If the vomiting continues or he becomes lethargic then he needs to be seen by your vet for treatment. Hope he feels better soon!

My new puppy is throwing up yellow and sneezing. What should I do?

Yellow vomit is termed "bile" and this is seen when the pet has an empty upset stomach. Sneezing can also be a sign of mild allergies or nasal parasites (not as common). If J.R. continues to vomit for more than 12-24 hrs and also has other signs of sickness (i.e. lack of energy, not holding down any food, lack of appetite), then it is best to get J.R. seen by your veterinarian for strong medical treatment and good physical exam. However if J.R. is still relatively active, happy and playful, you can try withholding food for 12-24 hrs then feeding him a bland diet of plain boiled chicken and rice or cottage cheese OR Purina EN Gastrointestinal. Hopefully this is enough to settle his stomach and get him back to normal.

If your pet has vomited this much in the past 45 minutes I would be very suspicious of a foreign body or a very intense dietary indiscretion (eating something he shouldn't have). I would recommend you start supportive care (like Famotiidne 05-1.0mg/kg every 12 hrs and a bland diet like Purina EN Gastrointestinal canned food OR boiled plain chicken and rice or cottage cheese. However there is a big possibility that this could have been a toxicity and if any more symptoms start to arise (such as ataxia (staggering) or shaking, crying out) then I highly recommend you seek a personal veterinarian for a physical examination and further diagnostics. - Dr. H

My dog is throwing up a lot and not drinking water. What should I do?

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Please, do not give Chapo anything to eat or drink for the next 4-5 hrs, then offer small amount of water. If he keeps it down, you can offer more water and small amount of bland food (cooked chicken or other lean meat) in the next 1-2hrs. If he is taking the food and keeping all down you should give him more every 2-3hrs. However, if Chapo continues to vomit, you should take him to your local vets for an appointment today. Vomiting in otherwise healthy dog is usually caused by stomach upset from gastrointestinal infection, inflamed pancreas, abdominal pain.
