My puppy ate wood kitty litter. Should I be worried about her safety?

Hello. It is amazing what can pass through the gut of a dog. I am sure the wood Piper chewed up has softened & should pass without incident. As long as her appetite continues to be normal, I would not be too concerned. That being said, if they are ingested in a large quantity they can be harmful and cause an obstruction. Typically once they urinate/defecate on the pellets that should deter them from wanting to eat the pellets in the future but that is not a given. You will just have to monitor Dexter in the beginning to see how he reacts to them. Larger breed dogs will have less of an issue (with GI obstruction) than small breed dogs. Oh dear! It's very common for dogs to do this, unfortunately - most of them love cat poop, and will eat it any chance they get. The good news is, it rarely causes any problems apart from some mild stomach upset as long as he only ate a small amount. If he ingested a large amount of cat litter, there is a chance that this could cause an obstruction in his intestines - this is unusual in my experience, but can happen in dogs who consume really large amounts. Signs of this problem would include repeated episodes of vomiting, not wanting to eat, and not having bowel movements. If you notice any of these issues over the next day or two, then I would recommend taking Marcellus to the vet right away to be checked. But as long as he is eating fine and acting normal, you shouldn't need to worry.

I think this should be safe for your young kittens to use. They may be inquisitive at first about the new litter but they probably won’t ingest enough to cause an issue. I’d consider having Micole examine by your Vet and some blood work done. Pica can be a sign of an underlying condition, deficiency or inflammatory bowel disease. I hope this helps!

While it is unlikely to cause an intestinal obstruction, the splinters from the wood may get lodged in his gums. I recommend keeping a close eye on Hachi for signs such as lethargy, loss of appetite, or vomiting as these may be signs of an obstruction. You can prevent Hachi from chewing furniture by making sure he has plenty of teething toys available and by appropriately disciplining him when he does chew on the furniture.
