Why is my cat licking litter? Is it safe? When should I see a vet?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 4 years and 8 months old | 7.5 lbs

I caught my cat licking the cat litter multiple times already, what should I do? His current litter is a clay-clumping litter. I decided to switch to this litter (attached picture). Is this litter safe for the cat even if he licks it? Thank you!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!

It should be fine if he licks it but ingesting too much could be harmful (obstruction). I’d consider having Micole examine by your Vet and some blood work done. Pica can be a sign of an underlying condition, deficiency or inflammatory bowel disease.

I hope this helps!
