My puppy ate a pork bone, now lethargic, vomiting foam. What's wrong?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I'm sorry Shadow isn't feeling well. It could be pancreatitis but it could also be just general stomach upset. He ate something his body isn't used to and there were sharp bone fragments. He could also have a piece of the bone stuck somewhere. I would recommend taking him to the vet because he is young and I don't want him to dehydrate. They may need to take X-rays. They can then give him medications to calm his stomach. In the future I would not recommend giving Shadow any bones for fear of the above things. Good luck and kisses to Shadow!

Dogs will be dogs! As a veterinarian, I always recommend to my clients not to allow their pets to consume any cooked bones. As you have already intimated, these tend to break up into shards or splinters, leading to potentially disastrous consequences. It certainly sounds like the pork Sargent consumed is not agreeing with him in one way or another. Two episodes of vomiting by itself is not terribly many. However, if you note continuing vomiting throughout the next few hours, I would absolutely recommend seeking medical attention. In addition to a bone splintering and causing physical damage to the GI tract, theses types of foods have also been known to cause pancreatitis. The clinical signs of this condition will include lethargy, vomiting, and unwillingness to eat. Another thing to look out for over the course of the next several hours will be any blood in the feces. A small amount of blood in the feces is not very concerning, but any amounts of pooling red blood is a definite cause of immediate concern. If you do choose to take your dog to the vet, it is highly likely they will want to take some x-rays to see if it appears the bones are passing through the GI tract. They are also able to run blood work to determine if pancreatitis may be brewing. Should they determine things are looking OK, your vet may want to administer some medications to help calm the gastrointestinal system and prevent further vomiting.

Oh no, it's not good your aunt gave Kiba sheep bones! It's a good sign that he is eating, drinking normally, and seems fine on walks. I would monitor him for now. Should he start vomiting, stops eating, stops drinking, has diarrhea, has blood in his feces, has blood in his vomit, or becomes constipated then I would be extremely concerned and have him seen by a vet immediately. These are signs of an obstruction and perforation of the intestinal tract, and it is a medical emergency. Should that happen, Kiba would need surgery. Hello, I would recommend taking Leo to be seen by his veterinarian. If Leo ingested a large piece of bone, it could become stuck in his intestines and require surgical removal. Ingestion of bones can also cause inflammation of the pancreas, perforate the gastrointestinal tract, break teeth, and more. It is not good to give your dog bones, especially poultry bones as they can shatter and cause obstructions or irritate/injure the GI tract. If November has eaten bones and is now showing signs of illness (not eating, moaning in pain, seeming in distress) it would be best to seek veterinary care ASAP for an exam.

This sounds quite serious for Beautifull. Pork bones can splinter and cause significant damage to the esophagus, stomach and intestines. In some cases, they can perforate the gastrointestinal tract or cause an obstruction/blockage. Unless a parasite burden is enormous, worms are highly unlikely to cause an obstruction. However, if she did have a huge flea infestation, she could have developed anemia (low red blood cell count) as a result of the fleas consuming her blood. Since this has been going on for another 36 hours, I am concerned that Beautifull may be severely dehydrated and/or anemic, which may be contributing to her severe lethargy. Beautifull needs to be seen by a vet immediately for an exam, red blood cell count (on a CBC or PCV), and abdominal x-rays to get to the source of her problem. In the future, make sure she receives a high quality flea preventative (Nexgard, Bravecto, Advantix) once per month.

I'm quite concerned this bone is causing Simba's problems. Bones should never be given to dogs because they cause obstructions, and he is potentially showing signs of an obstruction. You need to take him into a vet immediately.
