Why is my puppy sick after eating a bone? Vomiting, diarrhea, tired.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I'm sorry Shadow isn't feeling well. It could be pancreatitis but it could also be just general stomach upset. He ate something his body isn't used to and there were sharp bone fragments. He could also have a piece of the bone stuck somewhere. I would recommend taking him to the vet because he is young and I don't want him to dehydrate. They may need to take X-rays. They can then give him medications to calm his stomach. In the future I would not recommend giving Shadow any bones for fear of the above things. Good luck and kisses to Shadow!

I'm quite concerned this bone is causing Simba's problems. Bones should never be given to dogs because they cause obstructions, and he is potentially showing signs of an obstruction. You need to take him into a vet immediately.

This is very serious and he needs immediate veterinary attention. The bones are probably still in his stomach and intestinal tract and the diarrhea can quickly result in dehydration. Many dogs also get pancreatitis from eating rich, fatty foods. He will need fluids, an X-ray to determine where the bones are, and possibly surgery. My dog ate rib bones and he needed to be hospitalized and the bones surgically removed. Again this can become life threatening quickly so please take him in for treat soon. If Scooby has been lethargic and not eating, especially after eating 3 chew bones, I would recommend having a veterinarian examine him so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. I would recommend having abdominal x-rays taken to see if he has developed a foreign object intestinal obstruction from the bone chews. He may also be dehydrated, have pancreatitis, etc. It is impossible for me to say for sure without examining him and performing diagnostics. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Meeko. I recommend that he sees his veterinarian right away. His symptoms are worrisome. There is a chance that the bone has become lodged in his stomach or intestines. If so, this requires emergency surgery. I hope this information helps!

Shooter has probably developed gastritis from eating the bone. I would recommend withholding food (water is ok as long as he’s not vomiting it all up) for 12-24 hours. After that you can try feeding him something that will be easily digestible and easy on his GI tract like plain boiled chicken and rice. If the vomiting continues for more than 24 hours and/or if he starts having diarrhea then I would take him in to the vet to be examined. I hope this helps. I'm sorry Leo isn't doing well at the moment! Given that both dogs have respiratory infection, his symptoms could be due to that. Respiratory infections cause a dog to be lethargic as well as have a decrease in appetite. Vomiting can occur with a respiratory infection because a dog can cough a lot leading to that happening. Diarrhea, however, isn't typically seen with a respiratory infection, and that could be caused by intestinal worms. Puppies typically care them, and if Leo hasn't been dewormed lately, he could have gotten them from your new puppy. Finally, I'm not sure if Leo has been fully vaccinated or not, but if he hasn't, his symptoms could be caused by parvovirus or distemper. Both are highly contagious and very serious. I don't think Leo is being jealous, I think he is legitimately ill. Because I can't see him in person to rule out something serious like parvo or distemper and because I don't know his vaccination status, I do think having him seen by a vet sooner rather than later is best. It's concerning he hasn't eaten or had much water in at least 24 hours, and it needs to be checked out by a vet. Please bring him into a vet today. Best of luck, I hope this helps!
