My dog ate a bone, threw up, and is lethargic. Should I be concerned?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I'm sorry Shadow isn't feeling well. It could be pancreatitis but it could also be just general stomach upset. He ate something his body isn't used to and there were sharp bone fragments. He could also have a piece of the bone stuck somewhere. I would recommend taking him to the vet because he is young and I don't want him to dehydrate. They may need to take X-rays. They can then give him medications to calm his stomach. In the future I would not recommend giving Shadow any bones for fear of the above things. Good luck and kisses to Shadow!

It is not good to give your dog bones, especially poultry bones as they can shatter and cause obstructions or irritate/injure the GI tract. If November has eaten bones and is now showing signs of illness (not eating, moaning in pain, seeming in distress) it would be best to seek veterinary care ASAP for an exam.

I'm quite concerned this bone is causing Simba's problems. Bones should never be given to dogs because they cause obstructions, and he is potentially showing signs of an obstruction. You need to take him into a vet immediately.

This sounds quite serious for Beautifull. Pork bones can splinter and cause significant damage to the esophagus, stomach and intestines. In some cases, they can perforate the gastrointestinal tract or cause an obstruction/blockage. Unless a parasite burden is enormous, worms are highly unlikely to cause an obstruction. However, if she did have a huge flea infestation, she could have developed anemia (low red blood cell count) as a result of the fleas consuming her blood. Since this has been going on for another 36 hours, I am concerned that Beautifull may be severely dehydrated and/or anemic, which may be contributing to her severe lethargy. Beautifull needs to be seen by a vet immediately for an exam, red blood cell count (on a CBC or PCV), and abdominal x-rays to get to the source of her problem. In the future, make sure she receives a high quality flea preventative (Nexgard, Bravecto, Advantix) once per month.

If you have an emergency vet available in your area, I would strongly recommend getting him seen right away. Keep him warm, keep him hydrated by offering low sodium chicken broth, ice cubes to lick and get him seen the second you can. And make sure to submit the vet bill to whoever fed him bones and people food. It may not do any good, but it may make them more aware of the consequences of feeding pets something they shouldn't have.

If Kiba ingested a bone recently and is throwing up it's good that you're taking him to the vet. It's possible it caused some digestive upset or may have caused an obstruction. As for the itching, it could be related to the bone, allergies, skin infections or other issues so having it checked by the vet is best. If he's acting very lethargic, I'd wait on the bath just to reduce stress, however if there are any particularly muddy or dirty patches on his body you can use a pet wipe or clean washcloth to wipe it down.
