My puppy ate kinetic sand. Could it cause an intestinal blockage?

Sand can cause issues in the G.I. tract including information and potentially an obstruction/blockage. I recommend Tucker be examined by a veterinarian and likely an x-ray done. This is because if he does have an obstruction he will need surgery to remove the sand. If the x-ray looks good did it may be putting him on a bland diet and giving extra fluids will help him get better.

Because sand can cause your puppy to become blocked, it is important that you take her to an emergency veterinarian right away. The veterinarian will want to do x-rays to see if the sand is causing a problem and making her vomit. Good luck!

Hi, thank you for reaching out to Pet Coach. Chloe may have ingested enough sand to cause an intestinal problem. Not only can sand cause a large amount of irritation, but I have treated several dogs for obstruction caused by sand ingestion. We call it sand impaction in the small intestines and it can be very serious. The sand absorbs a large amount of water in the intestines and can a form cement-like obstruction. For Chloe, I would recommend that she is seen by a veterinarian as soon as possible if she is uncomfortable, vomiting, and/or has a decrease in appetite. Luckily sand will show up on Xray so the doctor can assess Chloe and may take an Xray to determine if her sand ingestion is causing a serious problem. Best of luck to you and Chloe.

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. If kora is not exhibiting signs such as vomiting, lethargy, inappetance or abdominal pain then she is likely ok. If you notice these signs I would get kora seen by the vet and have x-rays performed to rule out an intestinal blockage. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. Hello. Fortunately, there is nothing toxic in this product. However, there is a very small chance that this could lead to an intestinal blockage, if he ate any at all. I would go ahead & take a slice of bread, & apply a good layer of Vaseline to it. Feed Hikaru a piece at a time, allowing him to eat as much as he likes up to the whole piece of bread. The Vaseline will not be actually absorbed, but will coat any possible pieces of the clay helping things to pass through smoothly. The clay will possibly soften with the moisture in the gut & the warmer body temperature, too. You should see a softer stool in about 12-18 hours & may last for a day or so, but there should be no abdominal discomfort or vomiting. If you do see more than 1 episode of vomiting, or you think there is any abdominal pain or bloating, please see your veterinarian immediately. I would be surprised if you observe any severe ill effects from Pgmdad's seaweed ingestion. In the off chance she would become obstructed from the seaweed, you would likely note inappetance and vomiting within the next few days. Contact your vet if you note these changes. If she experiences any diarrhea, offer boiled white meat chicken and white rice in lieu of her regular dog food.

If they are tiny pieces, then likely it won't cause a blockage. Keep an eye on KD just to be safe. Signs of an obstruction include vomiting, anorexia, lethargy, diarrhea, and/or a complete absence of feces. If you see any of those signs, take him into the vet immediately.
