My dog ate sandbox sand, vomiting, and diarrhea. Is it serious?

Because sand can cause your puppy to become blocked, it is important that you take her to an emergency veterinarian right away. The veterinarian will want to do x-rays to see if the sand is causing a problem and making her vomit. Good luck!

Hi, thank you for reaching out to Pet Coach. Chloe may have ingested enough sand to cause an intestinal problem. Not only can sand cause a large amount of irritation, but I have treated several dogs for obstruction caused by sand ingestion. We call it sand impaction in the small intestines and it can be very serious. The sand absorbs a large amount of water in the intestines and can a form cement-like obstruction. For Chloe, I would recommend that she is seen by a veterinarian as soon as possible if she is uncomfortable, vomiting, and/or has a decrease in appetite. Luckily sand will show up on Xray so the doctor can assess Chloe and may take an Xray to determine if her sand ingestion is causing a serious problem. Best of luck to you and Chloe.

Severe gastrointestinal impaction and constipation or diarrhoea can result from the ingestion of sand. A check up is needed to confirm this clinical suspicion and treat appropriately. Eating the sand has likely make Roxy sick. Feed her a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If she refuses to eat the bland diet, she vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away.

I am sorry to hear Roxy isn't feeling well. Eating sand doesn't always mean a vitamin deficiency and even though she is defecating some sand out, it doesn't mean it all is coming out. I recommend taking her to a vet to look for intestinal parasites, which can sometimes cause them to eat things they shouldn't. It also sounds like she is nauseous (drooling) from eating too much sand and may need to have the sand removed. The vet may need to take x-rays to make sure she hasn't eaten something else with the sand. After that, I would keep her away from the sand so she doesn't continue to eat it. Kinetic sand is non toxic. A small amount should pass uneventfully as you've seen. A larger amount ingested at once can pose a risk of gastric or intestinal obstruction. Monitor for lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite or abdominal pain. These are symptoms that should be addressed by your veterinarian. Restrict access to the room it is in or place it out of her reach when she is around.

Poor Maggie. If she ate a lot of sand and seashells, that will be making her sick. Because she is vomiting, having diarrhea, is very lethargic, and not eating, she is too sick for a home remedy. You need to take her into a vet immediately to get this treated. Best of luck.
