My 4-month-old puppy has thin poop and ate cat litter. Is she okay?

She could have a parasite or an infection causing the problem. The best thing would be to have her examined by a vet to determine the exact cause. Your vet can test a stool sample for parasites and then prescribe medications to treat the diarrhea. She may need to a dewormer, antibiotic, or other medications. You could also add a probiotic to her diet and feed a bland diet of boiled chicken and white rice for a few days and see if that helps.

Oh no! Clumping cat litter can cause intestinal blockage if she eats enough of it. Also, losing weight is not expected unless they were not feeding her enough or she really is sick. The smelling like urine could be from getting in the box but it could also indicate kidney damage if she got into something toxic. I recommend to play it safe and have her examined by the veterinarian. She is so young and as you know, puppies are more fragile than adults. Try to get her in today if at all possible. Also make sure that the normal things are happening, she’s eating well (puppies should have big appetites), she’s having normal bowle movements and urinating normally and she should be playful. It sounds as Layla is suffering from a gastrointestinal condition, possibly an infection. it could also be due to ingestion of a foreign body material. i would recommend taking her to the vet the first chance you get, she will need to be checked first, if the vet thinks it's a simple gastrointestinal infection she will need an anti vomiting injection, antibiotics and a special food for a few days in order to get better. if the vet thinks it is more serious she will need a blood test and possibly an ultrasound in order to find out what is wrong.

Submit a stool sample to your veterinarian to diagnose intestinal parasites or bacterial overgrowth. Puppies frequently acquire roundworms from their mother or environment. The paper likely would not cause an issue unless it was a large quantity. Make sure he continues to eat and drink normally. A bland diet and/or a prescribed dewormer may firm up his stool. Monitor for lethargy, loss of appetite, vomiting or persistent diarrhea.

I would recommend switching the diet that has more fiber and that might agree with her a bit better. If after switching the diet and treats, she is still having problems with her poop, I would recommend bringing a poop sample to your veterinarian and have it tested for parasites. I hope this helps! If it ever becomes consistent diarrhea, have her evaluated by a veterinarian before her scheduled appointment. Keep in mind that it may be best to continue the formula until she is 6 weeks old. This type of diarrhea could be due to G.I. parasites, which is not uncommon at all in puppies. This could also be related to the stress of a new home environment or diet change if it's occurred in the past week or so. There are over-the-counter deworming medication. However you may want to contact your veterinarian and see if they want you to bring in a fecal sample so they can tell you for sure if she has G.I. parasites. Generally speaking deworming medication it's fairly safe and would not be harmful if your puppy did not have parasites. However there are some G.I. parasites that require prescription strength deworming medication. But your veterinarian could do the fecal test and tell you if that is the case.
