My puppy ate adult dog food. Will he be sick or refuse his puppy food?

Pet's info: Dog | Rough Collie | Male | neutered | 3 months and 5 days old | 32.2 lbs

I feed my 12 week old puppy Diamond Puppy food the purple bag. Today my puppy and I were at my friend's house and she has a one year old boxer. My friend fed her boxer and my puppy some Blue Buffalo Wilderness Adult dog food. Is my puppy ok? Will my puppy still eat his puppy food?

Trusty is a very cute puppy! The main concern when a dog is fed a diet they are not used to is that it can cause G.I. upset. This can range from mild to severe. In general it is not a good idea to give dogs large quantities of foods or treats that they are not used to. Monitor your puppy closely over the next 24 hours for any signs of vomiting, diarrhea, not eating well or lethargy. If these are seen, call your veterinarian. Is long as he feels normal, you can feed him his regular food. Hopefully he will not show any signs! Please feel free to post any additional questions.

Great questions! Since Bingo is only 4 months old, he should be fed three times a day. Once in the morning, once in the afternoon, and once in the evening. When he is six months old, he can then be fed twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening. He will not be old enough for adult food until he is one year of age. While adult food will not make him sick, it doesn't have the nutrients he needs. Puppies need higher amounts of protein, calcium, and calories than adult dogs to support their growth, and puppy food provides that for them. Make sure to give him puppy food. Yes, you can continue giving him a mix of wet and dry food. I hope this helps!

My puppy ate senior dog food. Will a few kibbles make him sick?

Thank you for more information on Tank! Senior dog food has fewer calories than a puppy food because they don't need as much given they are less active. A few kibble will not hurt Zeus, but it is not a suitable diet for him. He needs to be on a puppy food. I would feed them separately, and keep Zeus away from Tank until after Tank has finished all his food. I hope this helps!

Can an adult dog eat puppy food for a week if regular food is gone?

Puppy food certainly won't hurt Iggy if he only eats it for a week. The differences between puppy food and adult food are mainly in the calcium/phosphorus balance to help promote proper bone growth, as well as being a bit more calorically dense. As Jessica explained so well, it's important to mix the old and new foods together for about a week whenever possible to minimize the chance of developing stomach upset. I would also look at the caloric density (kcal per can) listed to see if you need to adjust the amount of canned puppy food that he's getting relative to the number of calories he was getting from adult food. The new food could have upset Luffy's stomach, leading to the change in behavior. He should only get a puppy formulated food, no human food. Puppy eating adult food, sensitive stomach. How to switch to puppy food?

He absolutely needs to be on a puppy food, unless the "adult" food you are giving your other dog is one that is "appropriate for all life stages". Any time we switch foods we can cause stomach upset. I recommend adding in small amounts of the new food to the old food, and slowly increasing the amount. If Chance has a particularly sensitive stomach, you should wean him onto the new food over a week.

Is it safe to feed my 3-month-old puppy dry food and cooked meat?

Trusty can of course eat dry food! Sometimes if they seem uninterested you can add a little warm water to soften the food but this most likely is not needed. I would recommend sticking with a basic hard puppy food and not mixing in human foods. Giving human food to dogs is a hard habit to break the earlier you start it. IF Trusty is on a well rounded dog food she should not need supplementation. Hope that helps
