My puppy has a 103F fever. Should I separate him or go to the vet?

A fever is possible. You can take a rectal temperature. He may a fever if it is over 102. If he has a fever, it should be checked out by a vet. There are no recommend at home treatments for fever in dogs that are safe. Do not attempt to cool him since you can easily make puppies hypothermic. Either way, I would recommend that he get checked out by a vet to see if there is a possible reaction to his current ringworm treatment.

I am sorry to hear he is not feeling well. I would highly encourage you to have a follow up appointment with your veterinarian as soon as possible. Young puppies need nutrition and will Parrish quickly without it. Viral infections such as parvovirus can cause fever and inappetance as well as many other possibilities. If he is still running a fever after all of this, I would get him seen by an emergency veterinarian to be safe. He may need something stronger such as a steroid to help with a potential reaction. A fever this high is usually indicative of a bacterial or viral disease going on. Your veterinarian will need to run some tests to try and determine the cause of the fever. Once the cause is identified the proper antibiotics, antifungals, or antipruritic drugs can be prescribed. The tablet given to your dog is basically a fever reducer but will not treat the cause of the fever. I would recommend taking your dog in for a recheck as soon as you’re able to. Hello, sorry to hear about Quigley. Fever of unknown origin is a broad term for stating that the cause of the fever has not been identifies. In a puppy this young, the most likely cause is something infectious (viral, parasitic, or bacterial). Other inflammatory causes are less likely. You should continue to follow your veterinarian instructions, however, if the source remains undetermined, Quigley may need testing to include tick borne disease testing, an abdominal ultrasound, and even chest x-rays. A high fever and lethargy should be addressed by your veterinarian. In a puppy this young they will want to rule out disease processes such as the Parvovirus, and will likely want to obtain some blood work. While it could be a simple cold, typically these do not cause high fevers. Antibiotic therapy may be required if there is an infection.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Tisoy! If he has a cough, a fever, isn’t eating then he should see a Vet immediately. He is so young that I worry he may deteriorate quickly. I suspect pneumonia based on your post. If he has pneumonia he needs fluids and antibiotics. You can syringe water and 2-3 times per day put him in a steamy bathroom for 10 mins and do chest courage. But he really needs veterinary care. I hope this helps and I wish Tisoy the best!
