My 28-day-old puppy has a fever and won't eat. What should I do?

Oh my. Poor guy. If he has a fever this can be caused by a bacterial or viral infection (i.e. Parvovirus if he isn't fully vaccinated). I would have him tested for parvovirus first and if that comes up negative he needs full panel bloodwork and a urinalysis. to fully evaluate him. He should be on antibiotics and fluid therapy to help bring down his fever. He also needs anti-vomit medication to prevent him from becoming dehydrated due to excessive vomiting. If his condition has not improved within 24-48 hrs, then you should consider having him hospitalized so that he can get around the clock care and treatment. Poor guy. I do hope that your pup Shadow is able to make a full and speedy recovery from his illness. For tonight you can try feeding him some slghly warmed up cans of baby food (meat and vegetables or squash) to try to entice him to eat. Only a small amount at a time to hopefully not induce his vomiting. Best wishes and take care.

Hi there! Sorry to hear that Poppy is not feeling well. The clinical signs you describe are concerning when they occur in a puppy as they can be seen with serious gastrointestinal infections such as Parvovirus. Other possibilities include intestinal worms, gastrointestinal obstruction and dietary indiscretion, among other possibilities. The sooner these conditions are treated the better the outcome tends to be. For this reason, I recommend that you have Poppy evaluated by a veterinarian to check for these possibilities and to start therapy based on findings. Oh goodness. I am sorry Junior is so sick. There can be multiple problems causing the signs you are seeing. Intestinal obstruction, pyometra (uterine infection), liver or kidney disease just to name a few. I would highly encourage you to have her evaluated again by your veterinarian. At this point I would say that x-rays and blood work are very important to make a diagnosis. If she is this sick it could be life threatening without proper diagnosis and treatment. It sounds like he needs immediate care if he is not eating, he is lethargic and may have a fever. This sounds like a serious condition that needs to be addressed sooner rather than later. Your veterinarian will perform a full physical exam and determine what additional testing may need to be done (xrays, bloodwork) to give you a better idea of what treatments are needed. Good luck.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Bon Chon! Have you taken his temperature rectally or does he just feel warm? Anything over 103 F is a fever rectally in a dog. Since he isn't holding water and food down now he needs to see a Veterinarian. He is too young and will dehydrate quickly. Causes of vomiting in puppies are: intestinal parasites, viral (especially parvo virus if not vaccinated) and bacterial infections, ate something gross outside, ate something causing a blockage, food allergy/intolerance, reaction to a new food/treat or people food. I would get your pet seen by a vet as soon as possible. Fever and loss of appetite is concerning and should be investigated. There could be any number of causes, but a sudden onset fever usually indicates an infection of some kind that should be treated with medication right away.

Hi. This sounds very serious. It is an infectious cause it seems. Upper respiratory infections, viruses, parasites, poisionings, parvo, etc are all potential causes. I would take the puppy to the ER Right away
