My puppy throws up in the car. How do I prevent car sickness?

Your vet can provide you with an anti-nausea medication, or some over the counter medications such as benadryl/Dramamine may help. Your vet can let you know the correct dosage for your pup's current age and weight. The good news is that most puppies naturally grow out of carsickness as they get older!

You can try giving Dramamine which is available over the counter, however it is not specifically labeled to use in dogs, and it is not effective for all dogs. I don't recommend to give a new puppy something for car sickness as Lady is very young and she may not have issues with car sickness. It will help to make sure she is not given any vaccines or dewormers within 24 hours of her trip. Keep her in your lap in the back seat or have her carrier easily accessible. Try to take a towel or something with the scent of her mother. Hopefully you will have a quiet trip back home. Congratulations and best of luck!

I would recommend asking your vet about a drug called 'maropitant' or Cerenia. This is the best drug for dogs for car sickness. Alternatively Ondasetron can be used, however it might be hard to get a tablet small enough for Fiona. Best of luck with Fiona, I hope your car trip goes well.

There are medications that can be given to dogs to help with car sickness. Letting your vet know that Coco gets car sick is best as they can provide you with a prescription or the correct dose of an over the counter medication to help. Usually, you'll give it about 30-60m before the car ride. Making sure Coco has a place where she can lay down and relax comfortably may help as well.

There is an awesome medicine called cerenia that is great for car sickness, but it is a prescription. I would call your vet and see if they would be willing to prescribed you some for your drive. One dose will last 24 hours and I would give it about 1 hour prior to leaving on the road. Be sure to tell your vet how many days you will be taking to drive 18 hours to ensure they give you enough doses. I hope this helps!
