What can I give my dog to prevent car sickness during travel?

Hello. There is a medication called Cerenia that is designed specifically for motion sickness. In addition, a very small dose of acepromazine may calm your pet for the duration of the trip. This is a prescription drug so he will have to get it through his veterinarian. It's great for motion sickness, nausea, and vomiting. You can try giving Dramamine which is available over the counter, however it is not specifically labeled to use in dogs, and it is not effective for all dogs. There is an awesome medicine called cerenia that is great for car sickness, but it is a prescription. I would call your vet and see if they would be willing to prescribed you some for your drive. One dose will last 24 hours and I would give it about 1 hour prior to leaving on the road. Be sure to tell your vet how many days you will be taking to drive 18 hours to ensure they give you enough doses. I hope this helps!

That's because doing so requires a veterinary client patient relationship which cannot be achieved via an internet forum. In addition, the experts cannot say for certain if a specific drug is safe for your dog. I would have her seen by a vet tomorrow to discuss the use of medication to help her with her car sickness. The vet can prescribe medication that is safe for her, including possibly OTC medications. You can do a few things in the car to help Rainbow as well. Keep her forward facing during the trip, and you can purchase a specially designed doggie seatbelt to keep her that way. They are available online or in pet stores. Keep the windows open a crack to give her fresh air. Limit food intake before going on the trip, and medications from the vet can help prevent nausea. Good luck on your trip!

I'm sorry to hear that Cooper gets car sick - that's no fun for anyone! Hands down, the best anti-nausea medication for dogs is a prescription medication called Cerenia. Benadryl is an antihistamine that can be mildly sedating for some dogs, but it very rarely helps with vomiting and nausea from motion sickness. Children and adult Dramamine have different active ingredients. The dimenhydrinate in the adult form of Dramamine can be helpful with motion sickness in dogs, but it is generally less effective than Cerenia and has more possible side effects. Likewise, at only 10 pounds, Cooper is simply too tiny to be able to accurately split a Dramamine tablet into an appropriate dose. I would strongly recommend asking your vet about prescribing Cerenia. I hope that everything goes well!

I would recommend using a medication that is geared more towards preventing nausea. Benadryl is a hit or miss and most of the time, I find, does not help with motion sickness. I would have a veterinarian examine Ginger and write a prescription for Cerenia. This is an anti-nausea medication but at higher doses, works well at preventing motion sickness. I hope this helps!
