My pregnant dog had a miscarriage. What should I do to care for her?

It appears indeed that your pug had a miscarriage. Hopefully she will give birth to the rest of the dead puppies within the next few hours. Take her back to the vet in the morning to make sure she has had all puppies and does not have an infection. She may need antibiotics depending on the condition of the dead puppies and herself, as she could become septic.

There is a chance that the other puppies died as well. Take her temperature and if it is above 38.5C please Take Honey back to the vet. If there is a fever, she has infection which likely is caused either by dead puppies or by an infection that caused the miscarriage.

Unfortunately, there really is not much you can do at home if she is bleeding a lot and has retained fetuses. She is going to need veterinary care to treat her problems. One important thing to consider is if your dog has any more puppies inside of her. If you are unsure then I would recommend taking her to the vet for an x-ray to see if any puppies are left. If she has not passed all the puppies by now she will need to have surgery to have them removed. If you were sure she has delivered all the puppies then her behavior is probably just due to anxiety and depression from losing her puppy. Give her lots of attention, love, and affection and she should be fine in a little bit. Help her get back to normal routine as this may help her feel better more quickly. I think it should be fine to let her outside with other dogs as long as you supervise them for the first few minutes to make sure everything is going to be OK. i'm sorry about losing the puppy. I recommend a vet visit to make sure that she doesn't have any retained placentas or another dead pup inside. Both these conditions can set her up for life-threatening infection. If she is eating and drinking normally, and does not have a high temperature, she is likely ok.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I would have Hazel examined by a vet. I’d be worried about a miscarriage or a uterine infection (pyometra). Sadly there is nothing we can do about a miscarriage but a pyometra is serious and life threatening. The vet will do an exam, blood work, belly X-rays and maybe an ultrasound to see if the puppies are alive. I wish you and Hazel the best!
